What have you done to your E89 today

Well, not exactly 'today' but over the last few days, I have removed, repainted and reinstalled my mirror covers due to some chips.

How easy is it to remove the covers?
It’s (kind of) easy once you know how. There’s a thread on here with photos. But, there are a couple of things in that which weren’t immediately obvious, to me at least, from this and that are possibly worth further description.

So:

1) Set the mirror glass tilt so that the bottom edge is sticking out to its maximum extent.

2) You’ll then be able to see two very thin what look like wires pointing downwards (about 1cm long). These in fact are part of a circular clip that go round a series of plastic attachments on the back of the glass.

NOW IS THE PART THAT WAS NOT CLEAR TO ME

3) You actually have to ‘unhooked’ these two little ‘wires’ from their retaining clips. To do this, using a fine long-nosed pliers, push each wire, in turn (NOT simultaneously), first towards the direction of the other (as if you were closing the circle, if that’s clear?) and then just unhook it by pushing backwards off its retainer.

4) Having done that, the mirror is unclipped and just pulls off - may need a little jiggling and gentle pulling.

Then comes the only part that I still found a bit difficult/heart-stopping…on both sides!

5) The cover itself is just held on by 4 plastic tabs that insert to the mirror frame. You DO NOT need to unscrew anything.

6) Using a combination of flat-bladed screwdrivers and plastic trim removal tools, alternately try to unclip those 4 tabs There’s slot in each retainer to allow you to do but they still quite tight, tricky and it feels like you might snap them!
At the same time, start insinuating your trim removal tools between the edge of the cover and the black frame, slowly creating a gap between the two.

Again, this part felt scary but it’s surprising how flexible the covers are!

Once you’ve got a decent gap established, the cover then suddenly pops off easily.

The reinstallation is very easy:

A) Just make sure you’ve got the 4 tabs lined up with their respective lugs and simply push the cover back on with a snap.
B) To reinstall the glass, first put the circular clip on to the back of the glass and hook the two end wires back on to their hooks.
Then just line it up with the retainer on the frame and simply press the mirror glass back it place (sounds or looks like it might be a faff but it isn’t. It seems to clip back in easily with a bit of pressure)

Hope that helps.

@Reamesy - the chrome rear badge will be effectively wrecked when it was removed - they have an edhesive pad that you cut away (dental floss / fishing line or similar).

So a new one - with the template & backing adhesive intact - is the best way to go.

Not expensive from ali express, about £40 from the dealer.

I’ve had great success in the past using 3M tape cut carefully and measurements to reinstate badges. 😎👍

I’ve uploaded some very gash videos to my YouTube channel to explain various aspects of the kits and how they relate to the stock versions..sold 5 kits now..folks keep asking the same questions hence the videos

My 35is is sitting down at the rear. The Ohlins ride height suggested is 367/367..against original of 378/367 mm.

Current set up is lower than that by some way.

Two compounding issues..

Ohlins only does one kit for all E89s..

28i manual is 1,750 kg with 47.3/52.7 distribution = 922 kg on rear (front 828kg)
35is is 1,895 kg with a 49.3/50.7 weight distribution = 960 kg on rear (front 935kg) and you wonder why the 35is doesn't handle as well as a N20!

In addition I carry a full size 326M front wheel in the boot when touring = 22 kg and toolkit = 10kg

Plus full fuel

And almost ALL the time roof down when hooning!

That's about 50kg or roof moving back say a metre

So with some bags and a full tank of fuel (BMW weights are zero fuel)

So the rear weight is over a 100kg more than a 18i/20i/28i on the rear wheels ie about 10%

In addition I'm going up to 245/40 19 and 285/35 19 onm my 437M wheels.

The 70nm rear Ohlins spring is jacked up about as far as it can go.

My 96 nm/mm rear springs arrived today from the States! Stock Ohlines in 70 nm/mm

Just discovered that Eibach do a whole series of these springs in various rates 60/79/88/96

Going to fit these Eibach babies to help wth adjustment and reduce 'twang' and 'boing' from the springs.

We'll see how it goes..now I found the Eibach catalogue I can go to an intermefiate spring rate if required!

The 345mm caliper brackets for this version of the Z4 E89 BBK are now in stock!

Complex self dug hole due to buying incorrectly some 285 rather than 275 by 35 profile rears for my 437Ms..

The 235/40 19 is tye wrong rolling circumference now..

So popped them off and put some 245/40 19s on..

Pic shows change in diameter of the two..quite noticeable..
