UK in car breathalysers and black boxes on their way

Some police forces are recording higher drug driving offences in comparison to excess alcohol, so it will not catch the druggies. Perhaps they could develop a device to check your eyesight, which I am sure would fail a fair proportion of drivers.

Just a roadside air test should be used as the cars drive past

Can't wait for those movie car chases in 2030, pausing for 2minutes whilst being peppered with gunfire whilst James(Jemima?) Bond sorts out his breath test.

I get the thinking behind it but f**k me this stuff is just unreal.

Agreed on the potentially positive benefits of a built-in breathalyser, I’m actually more concerned about the compulsory black box. Presumably insurers would have access to the data following an accident and deny a claim if you were over the speed limit 🤔?

I doubt that this will affect me anyway as my current 2025 M40i is my last new car purchase, although the Missus says that I am a pathological liar when it comes to car purchases 😬.

How will a built in breathalyser work with start stop engine technology ? Google ai states

Built-in car breathalyzers, also known as ignition interlock devices, will work with start-stop engine technology by requiring a breath test before the engine can be restarted after a temporary shutdown. The device will analyze the breath sample and prevent the engine from restarting if the alcohol level is above the legal limit.

No more racing off the Trafic lights

Or just disable stop-start! Pity Google AI didn't mention that!

Thats the obvious answer, but rather goes against the concept of fuel economy and saving the planet. That start stop was developed for. Be interesting to see how this plays out.

All Stop Start achieved on my 123d was the premature demise of the battery and starter motor. :banghead:

Thankfully this is only being proposed for new cars and I won't ever be buying one!

Trying to drive any Z4 would be a miserable experience with a black box.

You mean it goes against the 'claimed' fuel economy savings and saving the planet...in as much as manufacturers use it to game the fuel efficiency scores? Just like 'Eco' mode on my F31 where it just turns your 335D into a 316D so that you have to floor it to move away from junctions, and makes the cabin more humid as it's turned the AC onto 'eco mode'?

They're trying to make new models so boring to drive that you'll beg for the opportunity to use public transport (although that bus I got from Exeter train station to Lifton was really pushing on through those country lanes).

How would such a breathalyser device distinguish between the driver and a passenger or just some mate breathing into it?

There are devices that sense the alcohol level in a vehicle, a sensor on the steering wheel or above the drivers head could detect alchohol in the drivers seat, as always there are those that try to get round any safety system. The real issue “you cant cure stupid”
