OK,

So I've had the car a month now and need to fill the void in my life left by no longer scouring classifieds for the right car.

I have decided to change/ play with my wheels.

i've always loved the look of CSLs, so naturally these are an option. However, I also like the 359's (1M wheels) and havent seen many Z4's with them fitted, so exclusivity (being a coupé man) is a plus.

My final and least expensive option is to refinish my 224's. My car is carbon black so I'm a little unsure as to how different finishes would look against the paint. I like the idea of shadow chrome or hyper silver but am hesitant. Could a photoshop expert take the below photos and "do their thang"?

Anyway, thoughts are always welcome.

Thanks :driving:

359s (19x9 ET31 & 19x10 ET25) - £2106

http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bmw_alloy_wheels/3_series_m3_e46_alloys/19_bmw_163m_wheel_2638

CSLs (19x8.5 ET44 & 19x9.5 ET27) - £1756

Obviously these prices are both without tyres.

Does anybody know anything about this supplier? Used them before?

Will the 359s fit the ///MC, the wheels are half an inch wider than CSLs?

Style 359's go for around £1200 without tyres (there was a set on cutters and they usually sell within a day) and about £1500-£1700 with tyres as and when they come up........................

I never quite understand why people go for oem BMW wheels, some of which, as it has been well documented, are of poor quality.

You could buy 3 to 4 sets of reps for the same money, which if you really wanted to, you could change every couple of years and would be paying the same over that period of time.

I guess my concern is that whilst some BMW wheels do have issues (I've not heard of many CSL/ 359 or 224 failures) they are known issues, whereas I'd have no idea as to the quality of a set of reps. I'd purchase VMR's or Morr wheels for example as they are reputable brands, but straight CSL reps I wouldn't know if they are cheap (potentially dangerous) knock offs, or a decent set of reps.

CSLs/ 359's (as mentioned above) sell quickly and are sought after, as such re-sale of the wheels (if in good condition) will be easier and it will be easier to sell a car with genuine CSLs than with reps.

That's my reasoning anyway.

Interesting that the picture they have up of the CSL wheel is not a genuine wheel.

A couple of votes for 224's but no comments as to what colour finish...gunmetal? Shadow Chrome? Hyper Silver?

It is worrying Srhutch, I'm not sure I overly trust the website to be dishing out genuine products. But hoping somebody can settle my concerns on that one.

Now that you have put comparison pics up, I am convinced by the 359s. Modern, somehow more aggressive take on CSLs, and totally lovely

Sorry Bing, I should have fully prepared my OP before it went "live" . But I agree the 359s, although very very similar to CSLs do add a certain panache and I'm inclined to go that way. Sourcing a set could be difficult and I'm not sure they'd fit the Z as they are larger than CSLs.

I've picked the 359's but after looking at the inside spokes, there is a gap between the spoke and the inner step on the rim. I hate when they do this, it's a bugger to clean and it would make for a stronger wheel if they joined it together.

The other problem is that the rears are 10" which with 265's might not be a great look :idunno:

I prefer the csl's.

Agree the others look more modern, but dont think they suit the car as well.

Thanks Sars, but would 265s be my only choice? Why do you think they'd look bad (I'm not disagreeing, just completely clueless  )

This is something I've pondered. I prefer the 359s purely as a wheel. However, CSLs suite the coupé perfectly imo, not sure the 359s will do quite as much justice.

Obviously a heavier wheel also (being larger).

The outer rim on the 359's looks a little chunkier making the wheel appear a tad smaller.

Looking at the side by side the main difference seems to be that the CSL's have a more 'curved' spoke which, IMO, suits the coupe better & gives it the edge... plus, despite some peoples hang ups, replica CSL's are available meaning you can buy without breaking the bank- negative impact being the CSL's are less exclusive??

Hm - i always always wanted CSLs, have CSLs and wouldnt change them.. so im biased.

Mine are CSL reps, aside from the one stamp that is the indicator .. i cant tell, they're fine to me :) Equally before purchase Raify was moving them back to Silver, i requested he keep them shadow chrome and i'm very happy i did. Silver cars suit silver wheels, blue suits silver/shadow, and imola suits shadow chrome imo. I'll be giving it a wash in a minute, so once done, polished and waxed, and a brake test to shine those discs - ill try for a better picture.

That said - i'd never seen 359's on a coupe before, i think they actually look quite good, but i'm sure they'll be pricey. I'm not sure if i was in your situation, id be jumping to buy OEM over rep's - when you can get the reps + decent tyres for the same price as the OEM rims alone.

If i did win the lottery i'd be buying some Morrs and shipping them to the UK :D

1M style wheels for me - giving the CSL look but with a twist of different. If not I have always loved the Shadow Chrome which looks amazing against estoril blue but not sure how it would match up against carbon black.

My idea when I was looking was always to buy CSL wheels but since having the car I actually really like the oem wheels which remind me of the old M5 so I haven't changed as yet.
