Hall sensor removal question

Post by Reamesy » Tue Jun 11, 2024 9:29 am

Following code 00A698, I ordered new hall sensors from BMW. The E88 units at £15 each. Also bought new pins. Then measured the old cable, and cut to size. Popped out the old pins from the connector and all good.

However a word of warning for others. Take note of how the cable runs and where you cable tie. After my first test all was ok. Then went for a drive to find the rear hatch came up and continued to try moving up and nothing else.

Took it all to bits to find the rear most (shortest connection) had mangled itself as the piston moves back through the hinge bracket. Due to this the module could not tell the boot lid was fully open and tried to continue to open it.

A new connector later and secured correctly all sorted. In total 45 minute job with a cuppa ☕️ 😎👍

Hall sensor removal question

Post by Reamesy » Wed Jun 12, 2024 8:13 pm

So…not all good after all.

My car has been doing strange things. Randomly the door mirrors would not fold out on unlock. The four window switch would not work and I still get the following;

00A698 Rear-end module open during driving

00A69E Speed in soft top intermediate position higher than permitted

I only ever do 10 mph max leaving the estate and never found corners.

Now to through an idea out there. I have a SmartTop module fitted purchased of a forum member. On fitting I noticed none of the LEDs on the module were working but all functioned ok.

Configuration accepted and all seamed good.

I have removed it and been for a half hour test drive. No faults yet. I’m going to monitor it over the next few days. The fault usually triggers very quickly.

Been chasing my own tale for weeks on this. I will update my findings.

Seen quite a few rogue issues with the smartop on the E89..I wonder if it’s the same unit being handed on? :tumbleweed:

Hall sensor removal question

Good news and hopefully good news.

After removing the SmartTop the fault returned so at least I know that is not the cause.

A further inspection revealed my pin on one connection had not fully engaged. Reset it correctly and also I had both sensors fitted the same way. I reset them so the wires are facing each other and going towards the middle of the ram.

Another test drive this time with no errors. I will monitor and report.

Hall sensor removal question

Post by Reamesy » Tue Jul 30, 2024 6:08 pm

So even though the codes were pointing to the hall sensors, after replacing them, my problem persisted. I would get random bongs with dash warning when driving. My roof worked first time every time. It was just the constant bong.

Usually when accelerating or going round corners. So I invested in genuine microswitches from the dealer.

part numbers 54377228585 54377228586. £110 for the pair. These are located in the boot either side on the forward hinge mech.

It took longer to get the trims off to replace them. I did repin the new pins into the old connector as the new part has an updated plug which doesn't fit. I did have to cut a slot on the retaining bolt as the Alan head was too soft to overcome the loctite. A large flat screwdriver did the trick.

So far so good. Time will tell. On a positive side. When I checked the resistance of the old parts, one had intermittent readings which fluctuated. This could explain the random bongs. The other side was working the same as the new parts. Hopefully job done. :driving:

Hate to resurrect an old thread, but I see you're still pretty active on the site. Can I just ask, did this fix your issue?

I'm getting exactly the same problem, replaced the 2 hall sensors and am getting the same error codes that you had:

00A698 Rear-end module open during driving

00A69E Speed in soft top intermediate position higher than permitted

Just wanted to make sure this fix worked for you long term before shelling out for microswitches.

Thanks

Both fault codes can be ignoriered and dropped, if the initial fault got resolved.

These are (unnecessary) consequential errors if you continue driving with a roof malfunction. If they still persist, the iniitial fault has not been solved.

I thought that initially they were related to the hall sensors, but after replacing them both I cleared the codes and they came back.

Previously I was also getting the hall sensor specific codes, A691 and A696. These have not returned, only the 2 I previously mentioned, so it seems like there is something else going on....

Following this plan, it should be solved.

Thank you, this is why I was wondering if the microswitches are to blame. I just wanted to check if they solved the issue before shelling out on the parts

The fault is very intermittent so proving difficult to diagnose
