I think The Professionals had more of an influence on me as I had a MK2 Escort RS2000 and a couple of 2.8i Capris in the 80s.
The shape of the Capris might explain why all my Z4s have been Coupes!
I think for me (10 years younger than you?) it was probably things like the Dukes of Hazard and the fact that Capris were the closest thing you saw in the UK to a US muscle car in the 1980s. Around the time I started driving, 1991, there was a replica Corvette C3 that was parked up near my girlfriends house with a "For Sale" sign in the window - and to be honest the capris I had in my 20s were a (very much appreciated) affordable second best.
I always had a bit of a soft sport for Midgets and Spitfires, but MGB GTs and Triumph GT6's appealed more.
It's probably about 50/50 whether I ever own a 2 seater convertible, but if I do it might well something older than me, or a Z4 (because I love my Coupe) or MX5 (cheap and widely loved).
