ZM versus i8

This is aimed mainly at Mr Tidy who I have spied on another well known forum. I think I need to educate you a little on the wisdom of the oft-maligned and misunderstood i8! Especially in relation to the Z4MC. I love the ZM. But the i8 is spectacular and no it doesn’t need an S54! Waiting for the brickbats….. :o

This is a forum for petrolheads not wannabe Clive Sinclairs................................. buzz off. :D :D :D

100,000 mile straight six Z4MC for £12k or 100,000 mile sewing machine i8 for £25k :poke: :P

(not dissing them, and I wouldn't have one - but have had fun with them on the road and at the Ring)

I thought the i8 was a plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine.
Hence only wannabe Clive Sinclair.................... couldn't even get that right. :poke: :D

In all seriousness though, the i8 is fairly nice looking and has great performance but....................... for me personally it has no soul. Guess I'm an unreformable lover of a petrol engine with a decent soundtrack.

Yes it’s a little mini engine with an e/motor. It promises nothing but is surprisingly able. And (shock) a lot more capable than the s54. I am lucky to have both and the Z is a more recent addition. So, obvs an itch….Everyone needs a s54 in their lives.
.

To enuff zed - you can’t have been in one. It sounds pants next to a S54 (granted) but it’s still a petrol motor so it’s not bad at all. And all moderns have fake noise…..unfortunately.

Let’s see what he offers but I am more than happy with the standard power train (as most are who have driven it are). I know we can all get 500bhp plus from our regular EV dealers nowadays but 380 bhp and 500nm torque is still not that bad.

Yes I have actually; only as a passenger admittedly.
Apart from the initial acceleration and the fact everyone stares at you, I was happy to get out and never get back in one. Nothing at all wrong with it, just left me cold. As I said, for me it lacked soul: that certain something that all great cars have just wasn't there.................... in my opinion only of course.

Always liked the i8 and very undervalued, underated car. Ahead of its time and for the money great cars.

Ironically the Z4M is a very similar type of car from a different era. Super underated and undervalued.

Your never going to get a positive response from an M thread from a niche following of a niche sports car like the Z4M. With a target audience from a generation that isn't pro to change.

For daily uses, ive left ICE behind. Fed up getting bent over in every direction as a motorist from a cost perspective in the UK. Its a topic that doesn't belong here.

That being said, very hard to compare and as a package, the Z4M is incredibly difficult to beat for the cost. £25k for an i8 is a bottom-of-the-barrel, early, high milage example and isnt really comparable. Cheapest one is a questionably wrapped 80k early car for 28k. Asking for trouble with them as they do have costly issues that I wouldnt want to entertain at that price.

35k will get you a later nice example which makes it quite a lot more money and not comparable.

I wanted to have a debate! And to get it touch with Mr Tidy…… I love the ZM. The i8 and Z4MC aren’t comparable and I am lucky to have both and to savour the difference. We live in a very anti driving world right now and we should applaud anything which shouts “driver” whatever it might be.

To Tom scott - yes if I had £20k to spend it would be on a nice Z4MC not a leggy i8 (Caf N - if available). I just put the topic up for fun - to demonstrate that two very different cars can achieve similar performance from different ends of the world. Both have their place. I am still waiting for Mr Tidy to log on…..

The i8 would have been a far better prospect (imho) without the e motors and heavy batteries and a whole B58 rather than half, under the hood, or where ever they hide the motor. Or better still an S65 or similar M lump.

I like the look of the I8, but that is where it ends. Could have been so much more without all the weight and a proper IC engine. I used to regularly see the same car out and about on the local twisties. Think it was the owners commute route. Certainly it moved and cornered ok. But no soul would always mean no sale for me, buying a sports car.
