On the one hand they look fantastic, were expensive new, and are very rare.
On the other hand there are a lot of cars that look fantastic, some of them look better than a Z8 and MANY are a hell of a lot cheaper.
Ultimately though, when you say you don't understand the hype I think you mean "why the hell I they so expensive?" And the answer to that is that the price buyers are willing and able to pay is very high, because there are a tiny percentage of the population who have lots and lots of money, and they like them and know they're rare.
