Back to a rag top and if it's not an optical illusion, possibly more compact dimensions than the E89...what do you reckon?

Sounds pretty fruity on lift off, I really hope it's going to be a Porsche rival, the soft top points to it imho.
 
I doubt they'll go back to a design that's over fifteen years old.

The market has changed and they're pitching for current regs just like everyone else. Lower emissions and fuel use etc
 
Do we think the circular rear lights (a la MX-5) will be a permanent addition? I can't get my head round those on the back of a BMW...

No chance - those are just standard spares shop bolt on lights as they don't want to reveal any key features of the new car.
The only things they can and really need to hide are the lights, grille and any defining crease lines. That's what they have done. The rest the enthusiasts can work out from wheelbase, main profile shape, height at key points, etc.

If this is all to be believed I'll be delighted if they go back to a lighter, softtop roadster and ditch the heavy metal roof. Nothing wrong with it, but would love it to be a sports car not a GT car.
 
Still not convinced that is a genuine soft top. It still looks like a mock up. Possibly wishful thinking on my behalf but even less convinced from the close up shots. Maybe they will produce both models so you can choose?
