Z4MR - some newbie questions

I have tried searching for the answers to these questions (in fact, my wife will tell you that I've done little but read about Z4's recently!), but I'm coming up with conflicting information and I'm going to look at a (privately sold) car on Tuesday, so:

1) Can you get a Hard Top for the Z4MR? If so, is there any special mounting or prep required on the car, or can I just buy any second-hand hard top (in the correct colour, of course)?

2) How many keys should the car come with? 2? 3?

3) How tight are the seats for a fat bloke?!

4) Anything particular to look out for on the Z4MR?

5) Which of the following were standard, and which were optional (this is the most confusing - even BMW main dealer ads are inconsistent):

  • Extended storage [what exactly does this mean?]
  • Sat Nav [Optional, I'm sure]
  • TV [was this available as an option?]
  • Heated Seats [I hate them, but the wife loves them]
  • Folding Mirrors [very helpful in our narrow garage]
  • Cruise Control
  • Auto-dim rear view mirror
  • Electric front seats
  • Telephone prep
  • Bluetooth
  • Wind deflector
  • CD changer
  • Rear PDC
  • Xenons

Seat back pockets and footwell storage at at guess

Nav and Tv both optional

Heated seats and folding mirrors are options too.

Cruise is an option but easy retro fit.

Dimming mirrors, electric seats and xenons are standard.

Only USA and Aus cars had telephone prep I believe and Bluetooth is an option.

Can't help with wind deflector or rear PDC but I have rear PDC so it is available.

CD changer - why bother/worry most go the cheapo AUX route or better intravee option.

Extended storage, sat nav, TV, heated seats, elec folding mirrors, rear PDC (no front PDC was ever available) cruise, bluetooth, CD changer are all optional extras.

TV is very rare on a Z4M. Common on E46 M3s and a 'nice to have' to say to people you have a telly in the car, but in reality you will never use it.

Extended storage is a few storage nets and cup holders, these are easy to retro fit as I understand. Not sure if all cars had the pockets in the back of the seats or just ones with extended storage.

Xenons are standard as are electric seats and auto dimming rear view mirror.

Other options include 2 types of stereo upgrades (standard, business/loudspeaker and Logic 7), sun protection windscreen (keeps car cooler but might weaken the signal to a portable satnav device apparently), privacy glass (rear quarters and rear screen only, which I really don't like), extended leather (more leather on doorcards and transmission tunnel), bi-colour leather interior, individual exteriror paint colours, audio jack for mp3 players, wind deflector (a must for any vert I think)...

Cruise can be retro fitted (a place I think in the midlands/up north are doing it for circa £400).

Hope some of that helps.

There's storage pockets on the backs of the seats? :o
I'll have to check mine tomorrow

I have the extended storage, the net is a little useful, especially since I don't have the holes behind the seats since the speakers for the top spec sound system are in there. The cup holders are nice to have, just watch your knees on them.

Satnav seems to be the option that divides people. It usually helps a car sell but doesn't necessarily add to the value. I like it, even though it outdated looking and a little clumsy. It adds a more in depth computer display and having the satnav just there and ready at all times, without cables in the way, is nice.

All ///M's have seat pockets, but only cup hokders and net with extended storage.

Cruise can be added, but not that easily only folk on here had it Retro fitted have had to get indi's to do it.

Thank you all for the responses so far. What a very friendly and helpful forum!

The one option that I'd really like is the folding mirrors, but I expect that it's not cost effective as a retrofit. One of the wing mirror glasses on my E39 M5 is vibrating, and the dealer is talking about £1200 to replace the whole housing - naturally they claim that it's not covered under warranty as it "must be accident damage", despite there being no dents, marks or scrapes on the housing. The glass alone (auto dimming, heated, asymmetric) is something like £260.

I agree about the TV - I have it in my M5, and in 5 years of ownership I have only used it once (when I couldn't get home in time to watch F1 qually).

Cruise Control is another one that I very rarely use - only when there are lots of speed cameras about (e.g. in road works).

The Sat Nav (again, based on my M5) is rubbish - I use a TomTom PND instead, but for some reason I do like having the big screen there.

Hoping that Telephone, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity are all easy-ish retrofits/upgrades ... I'm reasonably competent with electrics.

Cup holders - can the be removed? I swore that I'd never own a car with cup holders, but I seem to be fighting a losing battle!

Rear PDC - what's the visibility like without it? Is it an easy retrofit?

Once again, many thanks. I'm looking forward to Z4MR ownership ...

Hi and welcome along!!

The cupholders can easily be taken out, 10 mins will have both removed, you will be able to sell them on here most likely, you will need a couple of blanking plates though!!

Good luck with your search

If you remove the cup holders I'll take them of your hands, you can even have the bits that fill the gap!

I'm sure others will disagree but I think rear PDC is unnecessary. I had it on my Roadster. I cannot believe that BMW offered rear PDC when you were only about 2 feet away from the rear bumper (and with great visibility of where the end of the car was with the roof down especially) but DIDN'T offer it on the front for a car with a massive long bonnet that curves down out of site towards the front bumper. Bizarre!

If you want ipod intergration then consider getting Nav as this makes the operation easier especially if you go for an Intravee.

Nav is good I think, and worth it just to get the Intravee for full iPod integration. Remember the cup holders are only visible if you push them in to pop them out, otherwise you'd never know you have them

And I find the rear PDC useful, that is a must have for me as I back up very close to a wall when parking on the drive (to stop the postie squeezing behind me car and leaving fine scratches on the paintwork :x :x  )

+1 Also useful to stop someone nicking your numberplate, or adding another one http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=35764
