Z4MR losing it at the Ring

So what’s the deal there, then? Seems to be the site of a lot of tourist crashes. People go too fast down the hill, take the apex a bit early and then oversteer out of it? It certainly looks like he’s scrubbing the front tyres a long time before he gets to the run-off area and could have maybe let a little lock out instead of panicking.

Either way, pretty grim viewing. Especially since those little triangular spoiler things survived.

It's the tourist-friendly corner known affectionately as 'Crünnchen' (real name Brünnchen) - as there are usually plenty of crashes there.

The trouble with the corner is that it punishes drivers who turn in too early, or too tightly, as the camber disappears just after the apex, so anyone still turning will start to understeer towards the (now wider) run-off concrete, and if they don't gather it up by then they're into the gravel.

Interesting, thanks. Yes, understeer not oversteer, of course. No doubt compounded by going uphill as well as the camber flattening out.

It sounds like a recipe for disaster, especially if people don’t do their homework and/or get caught up on the moment! The concrete looks like a horrible surface on which to try and gather it up again. Makes you wonder whether they’d be better off with a marshalled sausage kerb and tarmac run-off.

Still want to go though.

Get over there and do it. I was told keep your last lap ticket and I did. May still have it tucked away some place. Almost 18 years ago mind you. Never going back though my track driving skills are not what they once were and there appear to be even more eedyutts than back then. :wink:

I feel sorry for the guy, its an easy one to get wrong, I hope he gets it fixed and back in the road at some point

Hardly negative I think this a very warm and welcoming forum mate, he was the driver and he fooked up, simple as that
I have no desire to take any of my cars down that track..to many mishaps with drivers who are very good and push to hard when there are novice drivers around them. And drivers like our friend who looked out of his comfort zone.
All to easy to get caught up in the moment and push it past your limits. :wink:

This guy..... lost his wife soon before... it was his and her planned to go and do the ring together and enjoy this trip which she sadly didnt make.... he was out, living his best life, trying to find some solace in a hurt place........ im pretty certain ive spoken to this guy, may be wrong car but im certain it was him.

Poor bloke. Could happen to anyone, better drivers than you have stuffed it up there. Turn is a hand full. At least he's out there having a go, esp as he was supposed to be there with the missus. Could imagine he didn't have a clear head while out there, which no doubt would have contributed to the event. He's ok, that's the main thing.

I've had many more accidents on the road than on the track...even if you work it out miles per accident.

Road accidents (no matter who at fault, causing damage to car) = 10 in 500,000 miles or 1 every 50,000 miles.

Track accidents (have been on the grass & gravel, but not caused any damage) = 0 in 15,000 miles or 1 every ∞ miles.

It's petrol head nirvana, the people you meet, cars you see, the track early morning while it warms up, coffee in the cafe, the restaurants in the evening full of people from all over the world...awesome place I'll be back once I've got the zed ready

Not sure what track days you've been to, but every time I've been to one it's been a great atmosphere and almost all are up for chatting about cars, happy with passenger rides (usually in some pretty exotic stuff) and happy to help and lend a hand and tools if you get into trouble. But hey, that's not for everyone I guess!

Absolutely, the roads can be dangerous places, but the Ring does seem to catch out more drivers than other tracks, see youtube. Probably doesn't help with the amount of people who can use it, novices and pros.
