Z4MR @ Lewis James

The warranty is more expensive for any cars that have lapsed.

I opted for the policy with £250 excess as claiming anything less than that can generally be fixed for chepaer by an indy/yourself and for anything above i'd need to make two claims to break even.

My renewal after my intial two years lapsed was £660ish with a £250 excess and £1050/£1100 with none.

It is possible to negotiate two years warranty on BMW AUC cars which is why it can work out better to pay a little more as it works out cheaper over a two year period i.e. if a Z4MR is £15k under AUC and the warranty = £1k per year than the actual cost is £13k compared with private or independant dealerships when comparing like for like.

ETA in addition each renewal after year two will then work out a few hundred cheaper if you intend to keep the car under warranty.

Other thing to remember is that if you get it on a monthly payment cover it doesn't jump up like it does when you pay yearly once you break the 60k mile barrier. After 60k miles it doesn't cover the same wear and tear items like springs and dampers though.

Or you don't have a warranty and bank the cash into a special account just in case.

Good shout, I had it in my head it was about £800 but at £1300 I think I'd rather bank it and hope for the best.

Touching wood and fingers crossed I've been the years without warranty, that's £3,900 in the bank.

In my case, 4 years so about £5200, with a single non warranted claim (week before selling it :headbang: ) of £2600 (ABS control unit).

I'm guessing it could have been fixed for less though either through an indi. Is the control unit repairable or is that the abs pump I'm thinking of?

Got £1k goodwill off the price as I had full BMWSH so was just over £1600 in the end. You can have the units repaired but then you have to remove it and refit, bleed the whole system and so on.

I've been to view / test drive this car so if anyone is looking here is what I found.

The car is fairly basic spec with Bluetooth and a CD changer the only options.

Bodywork seems ok for a 2006 car that has done 51k miles. Front and rear bumpers have a few scuff marks but nothing too bad. The passenger door needs a realignment as it sticks out a bit.

Mechanically it all seems sound, I took it out for a good 30 mins and didn't hear anything bad (vanos rattles etc).

It's recently had Inspection II (Huddersfield BMW) but there are no historical documents / receipts to say if any other work has been done.

Unfortunately I forgot to check tyres, roof motor and brakes.

4 previous owners and 2 keys supplied.

The selling dealer gives a 6 month warranty but I'm not sure if it's any good.

Dan

Thanks for the info DBG - but isn't that a different car from that originally linked to? The other one had satnav and 45k miles and I think was a 2007 car. In fact the link in first post no longer works.

Different thread / car Darren

I've updated the link on the first page so it should work now.

Ooops, didn't realise two similar threads for similar cars

Maybe they'll call back after a day or two - I think your offer of 14k is pretty decent

I don't understand how they didn't bit your hand off at 14 k as the car is booked at 9,5 k .And bear in mind its the middle of winter when nobody wants a convertible . The dealer is being plain greedy and doesnt deserve your business .

I don't even see private advertisements of £9.5k for 51k mile cars let alone dealers?
It's a good bargaining tool but I think the rule book is less accurate with rare cars, better for more common cars.
Has anyone ever bought a Z4 M of any kind for < £10k with just over 50k miles onthe clock?

Somebody mentioned book price the other day, and as said then it means nothing for these cars. There are less than 600 and only a few are ever for sale. 12k might get you into one, but even then there will probably be a compromise somewhere.

Well the fact remains that any dealer will be paying no more than book price if the car has been taken in as px . Ok so,it's not a common car and there is a supply and demand equation to factor in here ,but that doesn't mean you should be ripped off either . Then again I suppose if you find the perfect car with the all the ticks in the boxes and the dealer is going to look after you then I can see why you might be prepared to pay a hefty premium over book ,especially if it's something you've really sought after amd worked hard for . It's not like it's going to depreciate like a new car .

Certain dealers will pay a lot higher than book price for these cars, such as Knights Garage with Tom Scotts car
