Z4MC to A45 AMG

They don’t seem terribly fast over a combination of twisty lanes, dual carriageways and moderate size roundabouts. One driven hard by a fairly competent driver really struggled to keep my RS4 Avant in sight over about five miles of such roads. I suspect my Zed would have left him wondering where I’d gone after the first corner.

The biggest sticking point when I looked at buying new was price which is where the 140i stepped in at 8k off list. They seem to lack character for me, engine noise or lack of it which I think you would miss from coming from the Z4M, the interior for me is also ever so slightly chintzy. The real reason I looked was the AWD but I just couldn't pay that much for a hatchback. No doubt they're quick but thats about it really.

To be fair Tim,the same can be levelled at the 140i...

Quick engine but the rest of the car is Meh at best..

Depends what you mean by meh, I'm quite surprised how many on the forums have swapped from a 140i to an M2 or M3 and come back to a 140i, best thing about them is useability, just a good alrounder at the pricepoint :) people concentrate on the looks to much but I love the slightly breadvan profile in 3 door guise. They will be history soon anyways, BMW have just announced they are stopping production of the manuals from July

I'm unsure for the 240s but yes for the 140s, the manuals are fairly rare anyways but it's the way it's going. Mines a manual :)

After cancelling my RS3 order (they're fucking expensive) I actually went to purchase an A45, but ended up in a C63 instead.

A45 is great, it's a go-kart with a noisy 4cyl that'l make you laugh. Downside is it's a hard ride/seats and yeh, a 4cyl.

Needless to say i now have an M135i (cheap, practical, nice engine). Given the choice if i had the money i'd still go and get the RS3, the M-lites are brilliant VFM but they're 80% of a proper M/RS/AMG product and BMW interiors are .. dreary.

I spent some time looking for a GLA45. Really nice cars and nice interior.

Just couldn't find one in my budget so went for an RSQ3 instead.

Doesn't have the looks or performance of the Merc but the interior is nice and that 5pot makes a nice sound.

+1 love the engine thats about it. The fact every man and his dog has one because BMW have basically given them away for as cheap as £275pm. On the first round of 3 year PCP returns the market was full of them and they depreciate like a rock. The interior I found really  not much has changed since the E90 imo still dark and dreary.

Its almost the new standard for boy racers too.. here in manc there are loads of modified 135/40s that have just ruined the brand for me... you get tied to the same brush. You can buy them for nothing and super available to anyone. They've become so mainstream and thats enough for me not to buy one. There is nothing in the BMW range that interests me at all.

When I test drove one I wanted a manual and was really disappointed with it, huge throw and the pedals were too far apart which made the manual pointless for me.

My mate bought one,and is trying to sell it..
Sakhir orange....its only done 7k and hasnt had its first service yet,is a late 2016..

Says £19500 will take it,he has lost a s**t ton of cash on it....A good car non the less, but not for me.

Whereas you hardly ever see an A45 AMG.

This is definitely a problem these days , I was sat outside a local bar on Friday night when up pulls a smart looking 140 , nice wheels and well tied down , very tasteful on first glance , out hops the passenger to come into the bar . Then knob head in the driving seat selects sport plus , aftermarket exhaust spits , pops and bangs and off he races down the Main Street looking like a complete cock .
I know we shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush but some people make it difficult not to . 140s seem to be turning into the modern Impreza.

I sold my Z4 35iS for an A45 AMG FL and kept it just over a year. I am now in an M240i convertible (just coming up to a year old) which I love far more than I ever loved the A45.

A45 is a hard ride but with excellent seats. Loads of extras if you go for the pack that includes the Panoramic roof etc. Build on mine was great and no rattles at all or issues with the gearbox (March 2016 build).

Why did I sell - it never felt that quick, was numb in response and basically not an occasion to drive like the 35iS was. The M240i feels quicker and growls in a lovely way.

The switchgear is odd on the A45 and the Sat Nav rubbish. I also struggled to get good mpg on mine which over 6k miles averaged 20mpg ... just ! Same routes and use in the M240i is 23mpg. Not much better but still better.

The exhaust noise on the A45 was rubbish - the M240i is great, not as loud as my 35iS was but a proper sound as opposed to the totally artificial noise from the 2L A45 engine.

I have to say the boy racer image has tarnished the 135s and 140s to a certain extent but they're popular for a reason. I find they're a great all-rounder in a sector where many other cars of similar ilk are great at one thing and poor at most others. Only downside for me is lack of traction in winter. You do need to own one to appreciate the car. Much better than my old E89 on build quality alone 8)
