Z4MC sitting lower at one side

Hi Guys,

Hope you can help with a query I have.

I noticed one day the gap between the wheels and the arches on the rear of the car differ from the offside to the nearside. I have read the thread relating to the broken springs on Z4's and also have a friend who has suffered the same, so this was first in my mind when I noticed that I had a smaller gap on the offside. Today though I took the wheels off and checked the springs and they were both fine and in one piece.

I am aware that the battery is placed on the offside of the car and that 90% of the time there is just me sat at that side. I suppose my question is would me being a heifer and the battery cause the car to be slightly lower on the offside?, I am 6'2" and weigh about 16 stone.

I wondered if other people with an M Coupe have noticed a similar thing. Also am I just being paranoid when the difference is just 17mm?

Thanks in advance.

i am sure i have read this before and something about the driver and fuel tank being at the same side, rather than opposites to balance it out, hence one side being lower?.

I noticed the same thing on my MR, but the dealer checked it and declared it 'within tolerance' I told him to cut the 'within tolerance' crap but he was adamant...

E46 M3s are also known to vary in height from one side to the other. If the springs are fine I'd say not to worry about it: driver weight and battery might well cause this over time.

And I have to say your Z4MC in red looks pretty damn cool with the CSLs 8)

Ive never noticed it tbh....
You sure the car was on perfectly flat ground???

I brimmed the tank as well on mine.... Cant see any difference??

The (my) E36 M3 came like this from the factory, so the same theory may apply.

The right hand side (our drivers side) sits lower to compensate on LHD models which would of had 80kg+ of a drive on the left hand side, so balanced things up, much like having corner weights done does. Unfortunately this makes it even worse on RHD, but they didn't adjust it during production.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Incitatus, do you know how much yours was different by from each side and what the tolerance that bmw reckoned it was within?

You can notice the difference no matter what type of ground it is parked on, but when I did the measurements it was on flat ground for sure.
