Z4MC prices close to Z4C

Hi

Does anyone have a theory as to why some similar age Z4M Coupes are close to the same prices as Z4 coupes??

There is still a couple or so grand in it, but is this because of:

Vanos potentials?
Warranty Bills?
Higher running costs (fuel, insurance etc)?

Etc?

Perhaps this is not really the case, but it does seem that the gap seems too close...

I can't advise on the vanos issues (I thought these were all sorted now, anyway?) - All in all, the M is a very strong engine.

When I bought my car (a 3.0si), I looked into the M as well. As such, the figures came out as:

8mpg difference in fuel, generally
£400 tax, rather than £225
Higher insurance
Higher costs of servicing. 3.0si is £150, £250, £350. M is £200, £600, £800. If you're doing a lot of miles per annum, it will add up. If you do less, then it won't be much of a worry.
Higher cost of warranty renewal
More bespoke parts if you're not under warranty

It seems to me that the M cars have a more limited appeal on the second hand market.

As shown above, they can be a lot more expensive to own and would scare-off many from taking the plunge on buying one.

Being so much more expensive to buy new, anyone who can afford a new M can surely afford the running costs (and repairs aren't an issue as the car is warranted.)

However, when out of warranty it's a big decision to go for an M unless you have plenty of money in reserve - and lets face it the later 3.0si cars are no slouches - hence I think the reason why the price difference narrows the older the cars get (parts for a 5 year old M are just as expensive as those for a new one  ) .

Thanks all for the comments (and the comparison data),

Seems in-line with what I thought...

The 3.0 Si being having more broad appeal and hence more price competitive. Certainly though, if I was doing less miles then it would be M model every day. Having had two M5's I know the costs and also the special feeling...
