Z4MC Engine management system

Hi Guys

Just wondered if any of you could confirm what i was told today.

I was informed that the engine management system was adaptive and that it learnt the driving style of the driver and adapted accordingly.

I Was also told that this function could be reset and re-learnt for a new driver.

Is this true and if so, how is it reset ?

Thanks

It's reset by simply driving in your normal style. What you find if you've been driving the car in slow, lethargic traffic is that the engine adapts to that by dulling down it's responsiveness. The only way I know of curing this sluggishness is to take the car for a spirited drive and use the rev range to the full which soon gets it back to normal.

It's my understanding that BMW tech's have a tool that will reset learned throttle adaptations. I also remember reading somewhere that disconnecting the battery will also accomplish this as well. However, I have never done this and would want to find out in advance if a battery disconnect would cause any other issues. Perhaps someone here has done this before and will comment.

the management can be reset,i was having problems in the low rev range so took it to the dealers and the senior tech reset the management and riased the rpm by 500 rpm and imo this alone makes the car a lot easier to drive around town :D after he reset the management system he told me to go for a spirited drive for approx 1hr.all this has made the car a lot better to drive

yep it's on here too, it's to do with turning on the ignition in a certain way.

mine was done after my cruise was retrofitted because he said i wasnt getting the full range of the accelerator and my mpg shot up straight after, as a result of both i think.

it can be reset by turning the key to the No 2 position (just before turning the engine on), leave for 10 seconds, off again and wait a further 10 seconts - repeat this process 3 times on each position. Next time you drive the car it should feel different.. I normally do this before going out on a spirited run

I'm not sure this works for the M,
I think this worked for my non M I had, I have also had the battery disconnected and I id feel the car was more eager to run when it was reconnected
I find the Z4M VERY and I emphasize VERY temperamental with its throttle and pickup,

sometimes (and I very rarely drive the car, last year I only did 1000 miles) Ive noticed I can get in and the car feels amazing, in fact Sunday when I took it for a little spin it felt great, very responsive, the car "barked" every time I blipped the throttle, and I just installed 4.10 gears so it was a great little drive,

Now I felt like doing it again last night and the car didn't feel as responsive as it did Sunday,
I know I'm not going crazy and on other boards people have said the same weirdness,

I am thinking of getting a ESS software tune for the car, Firstly to iron out the lethargic throttle and second to compliment the 4.10 gears,

If there is a confirmed way of resetting this throttle for the S54 someone post it!

I'm about 99% certain that does not work with the "M".

Did you not believe me? Give it a good old fashioned ragging and it will reset. 100% guaranteed.

I think it does. I've no proof, but my car feels different after I do this, though I don't think you have to repeat it three times. I reset my M about once a month. The throttle is always a bit tricky afterwards, just like when I first bought it.

Part of your problem is probably that you don`t drive it enough :). Cars like to be used and you need to get used to the car.
I`m not doing that many miles at the moment but on average drive about 60 miles each day for five days a week - just 16.6 days equals your 1000 miles a year. If you`re only doing 1000 miles of shorter city journeys that won`t help either.

Mine will become a second car in a year or two but I`ll still make sure I use it a decent amount each year (5000 miles+) for the health of the car.

IMO of course :)

Isn't this part and parcel with the old SPORT button... as in, when SPORT is ON, learned behaviour is replaced by a steep accel response curve... SPORT OFF means back to any learned settings. The reset on key does work, I've tried it, but then so does just driving it differently for a while. I can potter around and the pickup on peddle is slow, give it a good blast and the pickup changes for a while until it learns I'm driving like a granny again and slows it all back down.
