Z4MC Alternatives

I considered an exige when I was thinking of swapping my TVR but I have a soft spot for larger engines & from what I've read the exige's engine hasn't much character & I always wanted a Z4M & I thought as I was nudging 40 I ought to tick the soft top box so got my Z4MR :driving:

But in hindsight I think I should have gone Z4MC as I prefer the shape of the coupe & I think you are either a Soft top person or coupe person & I fall into the latter & as already has been said the Z4M takes some replacing it offers so much as a package that's hard to resist.

I would love a Zed with the E92 M3's V8 in it though!! :driving:

Don't bother. Give up and buy a snore-o-wagon....

Saying that, a 335d or a 640d could be rather fun and diseasal boring at the same time.

How about a Ferrarri 355 the first really user friendly model.

Drove one of these at Donno, it felt old and quite unresponsive, not really fast or fun. My M felt like a go kart in comparison. Made a nice noise though, and it is a Ferrari! Would still choose the MC though.

I get your argument Tomscott and definitely share your concerns as far as the government is concerned but I wouldn't be buying a new GT3 (although I would love to be able to). I am comparing apples with apples here. If I were to buy a GT3 at a similar age and similar mileage to my Z it would still be a heap more money. Given how much we all love our Zeds it would have to be a heap loads better/more fun too, and that is the conundrum I can't overcome. If I could I would be financed up on a lovely white GT3 clubsport by now :-)

Just like this one, damn it I'm considering it again...

Depends what you want, lots of these decisions are heart over head. You can get a 996 gen 1 GT3 for 30k but it will be 10 years old. Although the purists think the 996 is a great drive most want a 997 gen 1 or 2 although again gains aren't huge real world on the road.

GT3s are also much more sort after than the Z4MC and they were twice the price new, over £80k+ to what mid £40ks for a Z4MC so your still going to have to find twice the money to buy one regardless if they are new or second hand. As they are so sort after again their prices are still high. So really the performance benefit on the road may not be clear but on a track they certainly are so your not really talking apples and apples both were designed for different reasons. You would be better off comparing a 997 Carrera S as they are more similar and the price increases are not as intense, but again this is head not heart you probably wouldn't want a Cs. In terms of value the prices are the way they are for a reason they were a lot more money.

The Z4MC is a great car for value and performance, but it seems it is the odd ball in all of this which makes it more appealing. If BMW released another Z4M it wouldn't be mid £40ks it would be more like £60k both without extras if you look at the price increases of the other M cars. Which for its niche is probably another reason they haven't made one.

Also when you get into the high performance prestigious car arena you have to pay a lot more for small gains unless you buy a GTR, but then you loose the prestige. Which is the main barrier people hit it seems. The only thing people can do is just keep the Z lol.

Lol - think that surmises it pretty well.

The other consideration I did have was the 996 GT3 RS. I have been watching them the last 12 months and it appears they are appreciating, shame I procrastinate too much...

Man i think i've fallen in love with that Z4MR - shame there's only 1 alpine white Z4MR in the UK (according to some table i saw..)

I don't get why there arent more Champagne interior'd Z4M's available :( that's what i want!

z4mc/r covers a lot of bases ! So many very interesting cars have downsides , especially on long journeys or regular diving or allowing for ones dear wife/girlfriend !

shame i'm not looking to buy next year.. the future would be very bright then.....

* Edit - i know it's not an M, but With CSLs, a decent set of skirts and a JB4 chip, it's gona be a different kind of good...

That ^^^^^ is very nice :)

When I had my 3.0i Roadster and looked at the MC as a replacement, I obviously looked at alternatives. I spent weeks and weeks trawling through AT/PH, car reviews, videos, forums etc and IMO there is nothing else out there that compares, for the money. It's a bargain for what you get, no contest. Just my tuppence worth of course...

I could be tempted by one of these:

Just watched the Wheeler Dealer episode on one...

Z4MC is powered by the legendary S54.

i do not think that you can compare this masterpiece with any 335 or any SLK.

if practicality is an issue then you can have an E39 M5 :D

if you care only about driving and you want to have a :D drawn on your face, each time you step out from your car, then you should have the Z4M, a Cayman S MANUAL or an Exige

Now that is a beautiful car. If I had a garage I'd be seriously tempted by one of these!

The E46 M3 is commonly regarded as a better car than the ///MC, so the CS is bound to be a step ahead of the ///MC. As for age, they are only 2-3 years older than the ///M.

My biggest problem with the CS is that it doesn't look as sleek or as sporty as the ///MC.

Really? By whom? I've been up against them on many trackdays and the only one that could keep up with my ///MC was a 450bhp ESS stage I supercharged M3 Coupe with coilovers and a BBK. The only advantage of the M3 over the ///MC is the second row of seats :P

As for the CS, a friend of mine has one in matte black (resprayed not wrapped) and it looks great, but mechanically and weight-wise it's no CSL

By the press apparently. The M3 has "sweeter" handling...

To be fair I've read similar in magazines that the E46 M3 is a more resolved overall package than the Z4MC not my opinion by the way & I have a friend who went from a E46 M3 to a Z4MC & he preferred the M3.

I think the Z4M feels more special as a car & certainly looks the business to my eyes & offers a more raw driving experience in a good way, the problem with M3's is they are just a 3 series when all said & done with a gutsy engine under the bonnet whereas the Zed is a sports car

Think that its gets misconstrued they certainly ride better and are less skittish than the Z4MC/R but other than that I dont think so.

No it's not a CSL, but then a CSL is not an alternative to an ///MC.

As above, it's mainly through reviews/ articles that I've read that seem to rate the E46 M3 above the ///MC.
