Z4M vs Z435is

having driven many miles in both, there is no department where the M is better.

The two cars are quite different, to me it's those differences that do make the M better than the 35is (drifting with the LSD, suitability for the track, power delivery, noise at 8k rpm etc.). Happy to concede that I've not driven a 35is for any distance though and can see why the 35is could be seen as an equal or a better car, we all like different things. :)

we have one at work... spent loads of time in it and theirs just no comparison in terms of driver involvement, engine, and drive-train... the 35is isn't even trying to compete with the ///M on those levels and it simply cant... its a great everyday comfy machine, it doesnt deliver the thrills of the z4m, it actually cant deliver what the s54, steering , M diff have to offer. i dont think they compete in the same arena, both do things the other cant offer imo.... for a DD which is fun, fast , looks great the 35is cant really be touched, for a weekend special thing, with all the ingredients for "specialness" the z4m delivers.... would i want it everyday.. No.... no i wouldn't.

Been talking with a friend about this tonight, and it boils down to what you want from the car..

As an everyday car that is turnkey and fast then the 35is just does everything better..

A Z4M coupe looks the best

A Z4M roady is the cheapest way to get into ownership

You need to drive all yourself and see what gets you going..

this is all very true.

WOW - what a balanced thread!
I can't add much to the above - OP does need to drive them and get a first person perspective on the relative differences.
Fine choice either way

I'd take the M

Repair bills on the Z4 3.5is can be more costly than the M, they are far from bullet proof and have two turbos which can be costly to fix if they go wrong.

Drive both OP and see what you think :)

I can't get enough of the S54 though..... such an amazing engine

I have an E46 M3 and I never plan on selling it and part of this is because of the S54 engine and how it makes me feel when driving it

Let us know what you go for
