I think most production diesels are over-muted to appeal to the demographic that wants them.
However, they can be made to sound pretty fruity and nice I think... with lots of de-restriction.
Ie, my old car just sounded clattery and droney, losing out on any real character and noise. However, with lots of tinkering/welding of old exhaust parts (with the original chrome tip kept so it looked nice still), I got it sounding pretty nice.

Just a 4 pot Peugeot HDi with lots of tinkering.
I'll agree they will never match a nice NA petrol, but you can make them sound pretty fruity and characterful without them sounding crap...
