Z4m V Slk Amg

hello from the uk

i am currently in the market for either a Z4m or the Slk amg , i know you are probs going to be bias towards the z but please try to be as honest as possible.

the pros for the Slk are the lovely V8 engine , i have hardly seen any around , the hard top , interior is very nice . The only problem is the price , from what i have been looking at they are roughly around 5-6k more than the z. only insurance group 19 ( im 21 you see )

the pros for the z4 , look great , excelent proformance , good range for sale, better price.

any info and opinions would be great .

I'll tell you where I am. The AMG SLK is only available in an automatic. And for that reason, I'm out.

Not a great deal in the performance, the Merc is undoubtedly a nice machine, but the M is better value IMO. Now if it was the SL55 it may be a different story....

The SLK has a rubbish auto and the interior quality isn't that great imo, but i'd definately have one over a Z4m. The engine is worth it alone, sounds amazing (my dad has one). I'd be surprised if you could get reasonable insurance on either at 21 though.

At 21, unless you're a footballer or have someone bankrolling you, you can kiss goodbye to having either, to be honest. It'll be two and a half grand a year, easily.

if he's 21 and can afford either then i'm sure he can afford the insurance.
Not if he's going through a finance route. Any old chump can do £500 a month or whatever, but lump sums are harder to find!

But I take your point.

Almost bought a SLK55 AMG at a bargain price. Awesome car.
Seller got cold feet and pulled out the deal. Couldn't find one at similar value and settled for the Z4M.
For me I'd have the SLK55...maybe because I want to tick the V8 box. 8)

There are plenty of young people with similar cars. Insurance doesn't neccessarily have to be a problem. You also don't know that he doesn't live in a fantastic area for insurance costs, parking it in the garage, with 5 years no claims. With all of that, I bet his insurance would be extremely low.

In addition, although not exactly the same, I easily insured my Astra VXR at 23, and my Z4 at 24, with 1 year and 2 years NCB respectively.

Not an easy choice to be honest. Here's my uneducated view on this.

I absolutely adore the Z4 M but the idea of a V8 in a similarly sized sports car is very enticing. Performance should be more or less equal with the Mercedes out-dragging the BMW with it's bigger, more powerful engine and faster gearbox and the M would probably out-handle the SLK on a track but i reckon the differences on the road would be minimal between the two plus it's been on print a few times that the latest SLK is probably the sweetest handling Mercedes so far (CAR's, Fifth Gear's and Evo's SLK350 reviews are fairly positive). Both sound amazing in their own ways and just thinking of it now, install a nice aftermarket exhaust and intake on the SLK and you will have one mean sounding beast! Both are really quite rare although lesser SLK's are quite a bit more popular and common than non-M Z4's. Now if the SLK came with a manual transmission as an option then the decision would be even harder if i were you, not because the AMG auto isnt capable enough but because i like the challenge of mastering a powerful manual RWD car.

My opinion would be that you cant really go wrong with either.

Easy, the SLK is a WOMAN'S car....................................Z4M is a proper MAN'S car, job done. Regardless of what engine you have in it fella, everyone will think your driving your Mum's car.

I agree

bigshurv, and chetalien, if i was in an SLK55 AMG and someone yelled something like that to me i'd just smile and then floor it and disappear in a cloud of tyre smoke to the soundtrack of a blaring, rumbling 5.5lt V8. Woman's car my ass. :D

I reck it might possibly be more?
Im almost 20 and for my 2.0 its just over £5000...not sure how much that extra year or two would make a diff..
But if i can insure an M when im 21 for 2.5k...i will be very very very happy :D

But back to the point...hmmm
Not really sure either could be classed as a girls car more than the other...neither are really a butch car lets be honest...but im sure we dont need cars to prove our sexuality so who gives a sheeite?
I would probs go for an SL though... :P

I have 2 friends who have SLK's, they are BOTH their wives cars.I accept that the V8 version is defo a geezers model, but you'd be the only person who'd know. Also it'd be a sweeter drive with the V6 as the V8 is a big old heavy lump in a small car. My buddy with the SLK also tried for himself an SL with a V6 and a V8 and commented that the V6 was the sweeter handling car by a long way, the only saving grace for the V8 was the sound. Bigger is not always better I'm afraid. As a youngster, you'd surely want handling over noise anyway, the flippin stereo would be on full the whole time so you'd never hear the engine. :poke: :D

Hehe not all youngsters mate. :D I'm 24 and unless leisurely cruising around the stereo remains firmly OFF and the windows down! Engine notes rock!

Get a BMW Z8?
If i was loaded id deffo waste some money on one of those...i would probably regret it but woah what a car..
Never seen one in the flesh but as a kid seeing it in james bond....oh mi god i want one :P
