Z4M Tyre Recommends

I have a Z4M shod with Coninental Sport Contact M3 tyres as fitted since new. The fronts are due for replacement and I can’t decide whether to just replace the fronts with the same tyre or switch all four to Michelin.

The choice seems to be

Michelin Pilot Super Sports - the ones BMW and Michelin recommend

Or

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 – the ones that seem to get the awards

Or

Michelin Pilot Sport 4s – are these the replacements for Michelin Pilot Super Sports (ETA these aren't available in the size I need)

What’s the best choice?

I dont believe the PS4S is availible in anything below 19".
I went for the PS4 as i have alwasy got on with Michelin. Read some chat about the PSS being a tad faster than ps4, on a perfect race track, in bone dry conditions. I dont see mich of that kind of road whenever i'm out and about.

Whichever you choose I would recommend fitting a full set, all the Michelins mentioned are far newer technology than the Continentals.

OK, I'll check size availability again

The fronts aren't the originals... the car has done 60k so I guess 3rd set of fronts, 4th set of rears.

Yep I'm changing all four

I suppose it really depends on what you want from the tyre, pure performance, dry use only or is durability wet grip and mileage return any sort of consideration ?

Ah, you're right! It has 18" wheels so they're off the shopping list then!

the Z4M only gets used for fun and little in the winter / bad weather

If you use the car all year round then get the PS4, the super sports don't like the cold

I would probably agree with the above..........performance will be substantially better than the Contis & they won't put you in a ditch when it's slightly chilly :driving:

Contis are the OEM tyres I believe,

I've got Michelin Pilot Super Sports and they like cold a hell of a lot better than the Contis, much better in the wet to.

Another vote for super sports here, excellent tyres, probably not as all season as the PS4 though...

I have Michelin Pilot Super Sports all round and they are superb, way batter than the Conti M3 original tyres.

Based on a summary I read from a Michelin Product Manager, the PS4 and PS4S are both developments of the PSS concept (dual compound etc). The PS4S is for 19" fit and above only, and is a very slightly more super sports focused tyre than the PS4. The PSS remains for OEM fitment sizes and is a little more focused on dry track performance than the PS4, with the PS4S being very similar in track performance to the PSS. But these are very small increments.

So for 18" fitment, it's either PSS or PS4. Either will be brilliant compared to Conti M3's. So it will probably be best to select based on usage unless you simply decide 'latest is greatest' etc.

If your driving is mainly fair weather in sun/rain, with occasional or regular track outings, I would go PSS. For anything else such as year round summer and winter driving and commuting as well as sports driving, I would go for the PS4.

But either will feel amazing compared to the contis.

Enjoy!

Even the all-season Michelin Cross-Climate+ are better than the OE Conti’s.

Am really tempted to try them on an M, but don’t want to spend almost £600 on an experiment when I’m quite satisfied with my PSS (and that’s in all weathers except standing snow).

If it’s any good to you.
I was running contis on my M.
Whilst working at Continental U.K. (head Office), I got a conti tech technician to spec the correct tyre for my car. Based on the M stats they specified a sport contact 6 XL front (225/40/19) and sport contact 5P rear (255/35/19).

I switched out my conties several years ago. The MPSS is a brilliant partner for the MR. On my third set . Much better grip, more stable and far more controlable\predictable should they break away. :driving:

Thanks for all your replies. Real OEM is listing super sports and the car is mostly a weekend toy. I’m guessing the super sports have an edge in good conditions and the mps4 has the edge in wet/damp conditions. Yes? Having said that is the Michelin super sport dodgy in the wet? I do live in Lancashire...

I find the MPSS great in the wet so don’t worry on that account. I read on another forum that the PS4S will become available in March, if that’s correct you might want to hang on until then.

do you mean MPS4S will available in 18" sizes in March?

Yes, that’s what I read. As for a link, I think it was on Pistonheads. If I can find it I’ll post it up.
