Z4M to M135i thoughts ?

The 5 door will be heading our shores around September this year. I might be at that point were I will need to give up the Z4 for something that has 4 seats.
In terms of performance numbers, it seems the M135i is no slouch.
Anyone else here eagerly awaiting this car?

Yes looks awesome but I would never trade the Z4M in for one. Would buy one to go with it  great value!

Brand new suspension set up, cracking engine, great economy, looks pretty nice, nice interior, a good little family car! But the Z is something special whereas the M135 is more of an S3 competitor... not quite as rare and special. Hope they bring this out in the new coupe! Be incredible.

It does look an awesome motor, if it wasn't for the fact i've just bought a new kitchen, then i'd have looked at a nice fat deposit for one or an 1M :(

A 1M coupe would be the only alternative, but then still a different animal. As Tom said, more like an alternative to an S3.

320bhp and 35MPG, not much wrong with those stats. Different beast to the Z4 M though.
I've driven a current 306BHP 1 series Coupe that had a software upgrade to 320BHP and quite liked it, although the car still had a throttle response issue that appeared when BMW applied a DME software upgrade previously to work around an issue with the car stalling and not wanting to start. Even with the 320BHP package it still didn't quite feel right on the throttle response front. Brakes on the 135 M Sport Coupe are quite impressive just to look at :)

New 1 series looks alright and wouldn't mind testing a 3 door 135 M Sport when they arrive just to see how well the new 1'er has been developed.

For me personally the 135i is a no go... The performance is really ok, but I think the new 1serie's is really ugly and I could not live with the look. But everyone his own taste. If I could only have one car and needed a car to fit 4 persons, I would go for used 1M coupe or used E92 M3. The only two cars I would think of when for some reason I needed to trade in my Z4M. Still somehow those two feel less special. My Z4M is my second car and feels like something unique that not a lot of cars have. I'm keeping it until the day it dies or gets stollen (let's hope those things never happen  )... Knock on wood

Much better off buying a one or two year old lease return. As with most cars. You loose about %20 the moment you walk out the door. And it gets worse from there. I bought a two year old 328 with 12,000 miles on it with warr. For 25,000 USD. Or i could have bought new for $40k. I personally didn't think it was worth $15 k of my money just to say i was the first owner.

I did some miles in a 135i (previous version) and found it hugely underwhelming.

I really dont like the power delivery of the -35i engine - peak power happens 1200-1500 rpm before the red line.... it's all mid-range and no fizz at the top. It's like a big diesel (although it sounds better).

My thoughts exactly... But if everyone thinks this way; then there are no more cars sold new and where are we going to buy the used ones?

I think from the objective side the *35i BMWs are really great.

- enough power
- the feeling that there is full power from idle
- more seats
- better comfort
- and so on

But, when you drove 2 weeks a car like this or like in my case a E36 328i the best thing after a hard week is to drive with your Z4M into the sunset, pure fun and satisfaction :driving:

When i drive my Zed every day it gets annoying, but as a fun car, just perfect.

Agree but two thoughts.
1. Although you're not referrign to buying from a dealer, over here a lot of second hand dealer cars are what they call Ex-Demonstrators. This sounds alright but actually they're often used as courtesy cars when people have their own car serviced, so get abused.
2. It's nice to be the first owner but also knowing nobody else has driven it has an appeal- you know the full history of the car from the moment you jump in. I'm working in a big(ish) city at the moment and the number cars and even new cars I see being 'clutch ridden' at traffic lights even on hills shocks me. And with so many options available, when buying new you can get the exact spec you want which is very difficult when buying second hand.

I have never bought a new car either and have been fairly lucky with the used cars I've bought but I can see why many people will only buy new, even if the cost is much greater. Also the market seems ready for the demand from those looking for 2 year old cars, so the pricing can often be quite firm on the forecourt.
