Z4m service and warranty

Hi

Am looking to buy a 2006 Z4m coupe which will be 3 years old in a few months. The Inspection 1 is due in 3.5k miles which I understand costs upwards of £600. The private dealer has suggested that I could get this done by an independent specialist which may be more like £350, but my concerns are whether this invalidates the warranty and whether not having a bmw stamp might affect the re-sale value later on. Conscious that the service could be a good opportunity to identify/fix any warranty issues before it expires. Also is there a concensus on extending the bmw warranty? The posts I've read based on a search seem to point towards it being a good idea and this is another quite large outlay I would need to factor in when buying the car.

Any thoughs greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Did mine for about 600, then there's a relatively cheap oil service for 250, then the inspection ii is about 950 :o

If you get it serviced outside the dealers, you apparently wouldn't be able to sell it as an AUC which would be a problem.

If you extend the warranty (as I have) you will also have to stick within their dealer network.

My warranty is £87pm and yours will probably be the same if it's under 60k.

In case you haven't spotted it yet, make sure you check it's had the 1200 mile running in service, as it can have huge problems if not.

Good luck, you'll love it :driving: 8)

I got a BMW dealer to do my Insp 1 for £450 so there is movement on price if you haggle and play one dealer off another. There was a thread on here recently covering that very topic if you do a search.

My car will be 3 years old in the next few months and I definitely will extend the warranty. Whether you do so all depends on your attitude to risk. You may never need it but if something does go wrong you could have a several thousand pound bill to pay in the worst case scenario.

I agree entirely.

How much does it cost on an average to extend the warranty. Mine is done 21K and is 3 yrs old. I bought it used so still have another 6 month warranty left on it.

This has been covered a few times, I think I was one of the first to extend the warranty and I paid nigh on £900.

Have a search and you will find plenty of breakdowns I have written out on the pricing structure of the warranty etc.

Thanks,

Jack

Cheers Jack, I'm thinking whether to get warranty or not. I've another 6 months before my current one expires. CAnt make up my mind.

I would go for it.

I renewed mine in April and have claimed around £500 already.

Getting the tappets done this week too!

Thanks for the the responses. I guess there's a bit of an unknown in that cars are only just now starting to reach their 3 year birthdays, but bmw warranty seems to be worthwhile for peace of mind , plus service it at bmw. I'm wondering if it's worth getting the inspection 1 done before I buy it so that it gets a full checkover done by bmw and warranty issues can be sorted pre-sale. Are there any downsides to having the inspection done 3k miles before it's due?

Don't bother.

When you get the car ring BMW say your car is under warranty quote the number plate etc, then say you think there is a strange noise coming from the Vanos and the tappets are loud.

They will take it in run diagnostics and tell you if there are any other faults.

I did this and they found a bunch of little niggles and at the end of the day they claim it all off BMW UK anyway.

Having just bought a 2 year old car with 12K on it, I was informed by the dealer that if it is within 3-4K of the service they have to perform the service under BMWs approved used car rules. I'd therefore make sure the dealer is going to stick to these guidelines. I therefore have 12K odd miles before my next service :D

Edit: Doh. it's a private dealer - I should have read the post... I'm off to hang my head in shame...

JDMc, how early is your car ? Mine is apparently a press car and I've made them look over and over for faults, tappets included and found nothing so i might just be lucky.

Mine ran out last week, but I've extended it anyway.

Well I have been PARTICULARLY picky.

I even got them to replace the A pillar trims, "M" logo door sills, Vacuum Pump and a number of other things all by having a good whinge.

So theoretically the only thing that has been done that is needed is the tappets this week and they aren't that bad I can just tell they aren't 100%.

Car is an April 06 so probably not quite press car age but one of the older ones.

I am in no way saying it has been unreliable I just like to get my moneys worth! :)

I have AUC warranty which runs out in december but will i be able to use any dealer for warranty work or it has to be the one I bought from? cheers
