Z4M S54, the ?th most powerful PER LITRE normally aspirated road car ever made?

Oh well I suppose the KH500 I used to own needs to be added to the triple library!

Where are the ferrari 458, 458 speciale and F12?

Yes! 458S should be right up there.

Even the “ancient” F50 was 110bhp/l or thereabouts.

Here's a relevant slide from my ICE lecture.

In that diagram the 4.2 FSI from Quattro gmbh (in r8 v8 etc) is not listed
It has a redline of 8,250 rpm and a stroke of 92.8 millimetres.
That results in a mean piston speed of 25,52m/s

Oh wait, thats off that graph, that's why it's not listed

The s54 has a relatively long stroke for the revs it reaches, that probably contributes to the issues it can have with big end shell bearings, the high piston speed must put a large loading on them :?

Lovely! A friend has an RG500 with RGV heads. That apparently goes well, not that I have ever seen it working!

Enough of the tiddlers: I raise you my H2. A couple of old chaps begged me not to ride it! It does sound berluddy mean, but it's more the lack of chassis / brakes that makes it eye-watering.

I’m also equally guilty, i present the smartbear 400 triple with Nickel plated frame etc etc
Ps, is that an H2B?

Lovely! Yes a H2B.

MrTidy, love the KH500 too!

Hummm... looks like I have a little work to do updating the list.

Regret all the bikes qualify out... thanks for all the other input

Who cares if than beautiful thing even has an engine. 8) :sweetheart:

How about this little beauty?

mk4_3012.png

Kyosho Inferno with 3.5cc engine putting out 0.9hp (@ over 30,000rpm) - which would give it about 257hp/litre.

However, there are some slightly larger engines making 2hp from 5.0cc (at over 27,000rpm) - which gives them about 400hp/litre, and some big (for RC) 7.5cc engines making 4.5hp - which gives them almost 600hp/litre.

:D

If we're playing that game my 30 year old RGV250 had 250bhp per litre NA. :tumbleweed:

Comparing piston speed, the S54 has the dubious award of being near the top of the pops.

My 40 year old stage3 rg500 would come in around 230bhp/litre specific output :P

I was going to say almost every 1000cc bike made would be more than the best listed but you have well beaten me to it with your RG.
My 13 year old R1 is 159bhp and Nickis 12 year old R1 is 169bhp at the rear wheel.

But that's not a petrol engine.
It has more in common with a top fuel dragster engine, running on a nitromethane mix.
(top fuel dragster engines are supercharged but do over 1300hp/L)
Of course dragster engines are 4 stroke (and uses an otto cycle afaik) and this is a 2 stroke using I guess a diesel cycle.

The question was "most powerful PER LITRE normally aspirated road car ever made?"...but that hasn't stopped people listing 'track only' cars, and motorbikes...and it doesn't specify petrol at all.

My RC car runs on a 20% nitro blend (the rest is lubricant really), but I can run it on petrol (takes longer to start) with or without a nitro mix.

Honda S2000, 240bhp (or probably PS) which is a 2.0. So 4th place, not bad for 20 year old car, epic engine.
Just to add... JDM S2000, 250bhp, 125bhp per litre

I spent a small fortune on an s2000 for years, what's amazing is how tuneable they are too, epic engine (and gearbox) 8)

The standard Honda S2k are 237bhp! Not 240! However having owned one they are a very good car with a fantastic gearbox.

So... firstly lots of thanks... & sifting through through this is what I currently have
- motorbikes qualify out
- as does anything Hybrid, nor anything that doesn't count as a legal Road Car or tuned
- JDM cars are in where applicable if not aftermarket tuned
- looks like Rob's the winner with his RX-8

Most Honda Type R engines would also make the top 10, e.g. the B16B at 182bhp from 1.6l

Aston Martin Valkyrie 1000bhp 6.5l is a Hybrid

Try putting in a few TVR's in the list, ie Griffith 500, Tuscan 4.0S, Cerbera 4.5, Sagaris etc. The results might be more interesting!

Unfortunately don’t quite see they cut the mustard as much as the S54…
Griffith 500 = 68 (340/5)
Tuscan = 95 (380/4)
Cerbra Red Rose = 98 (440/4.5)
Sagaris = 101.5 (406/4)

Nice try… but I’m going to have to qualify these out as a non-road car, although quite correct didn’t specify whether petrol as this tends to remove everything else.

Believe the Spyder is a Hybrid so qualifies out + have your 991.1 GTS down as 395bhp from 3.8 litres
