Faster: Agreed

Better: Strongly disagree.

For me the best bit of driving is the involvement of the clutch pedal. Down-shifting and heel-toe shifting are two very rewarding skills, both of which (skills) are non-existent in auto cars. No doubt I would still enjoy driving an auto (and for a DD I will always advocate autos) but for a weekend/ hoon/ sports car imo a manual is the only way to go.
+1  :driving:

EDIT: just replying to Kryton's apparent inability to possibly perceive an alternative view,

Not for the first time you've had a go at me, that was of course my opinion which is what we all express :poke:

"if" driven correctly they are miles better and faster than a manual

You forgot the double de-clutching. I really miss that........!!!

I had a go in a 997.2 Carrera GT4S with the PDK gearbox about 2 weeks ago and in sport plus it still kept changing even tho I didnt ask it to. Thought in Sport + you were supposed to have full control? The gear box is rapid but I do love the manual more.... Just seems lazy for a car with that kind of calibre, even if it is quicker you wont feel the difference on the road anyway. Having an auto up here would be a shame.

It is just like Microsoft, with each release of Windows you are less in control :D

As I mentioned, the Abarth has the same type of gearbox and it is "fully manual". Yeah right.

Was listening to a new 911 driving away at speed at the weekend, and it just sounded very artificial - too perfect in a way.

Depends without the sports exhaust button pressed, with it on they sounds epic like a completely different beast. But now with the 997/997.2/991 you have to have the sport button pressed to have it on, so it works low down until about 4k so when you want people to hear it your jumping all over the place similar with the Z with the sport button on.

I must admit I felt a tinge of disappointment that the latest GT3 is twin clutch only as that's one of my favourite cars of all time, most reviews say you don't miss the manual though but I still wouldn't mind the option to buy one with a stick :driving:

I suppose I shouldn't worry too much because unless I win the lottery I won't be able to afford one ever anyway!

This comes from people that drive cars for a living tho and drive everything thats in the stratosphere for us

I agree & I think it's easy for them just to get wrapped up in the new technology & they forget about a few enthusiasts that really enjoy the interaction of three pedals ( I am beginning to sound like a broken record! sorry.) :driving:

I cannot see how anyone can have a problem with the 35iS's DCT gearbox "if" driven correctly they are miles better and faster than a manual, worrying which gear you're in shows it's not been driven correctly :driving:

The Porsche PDK is light years ahead of it's 991S counter part with it's notchy gearbox and very, very heavy clutch pedal.

There's a lot to be said for euthanasia before I get an automatic ;)

My mate with his 335i just will not even consider a Manual. Thinks it's pointless. Manual is the way to go ;)

So if you chip a 35i up to 340bhp (similar power as 35is) do you need an LSD :) ?

So, have u owned it since new, wrapped it up out the way on cold nights, whispered sweet nothing's in its ear then shown her who's the daddy?

Out of interest PVR, does this mean your //M might be up for negotiation?

Nope, I was listening to a 911 drive away, nothing to do with me and stop putting words in my heart that my mind does not want to hear :D

lol am I sure... I've only had the car ooh, how many years. Perhaps you weren't driving it correctly? It was a strange car to you... Yes I use the car to its fullest. In sport/manual it will stay in whatever gear you choose. It will shift if you try to stall it, or redline it, that's all. In non manual mode (i.e. you used paddles but did not put the 'box into (left) sport) it will 'assist' with gears just like when its in normal mode.

Spot on

Without looking, how do you know what gear you are in? I found I was guessing that I had to shift down 1 or 2 depending on which gear I was in.

I "need" to know that when approaching something to overtake I can just put it in second, and not guess 1 or 2 clicks down. Not to mention that a long click moves it down more than you might.
Each ratio is about 1k apart you stop thinking in gears and start working in revs. I.e. if your at 5k rpm, down 2 would bang it on the red line. It's a bit like learning to drive all over again...
