Z4M misfire at 3500rpm

Earlier today my car started misfiring around 3500rpm. I was low on fuel and figured it was that, so brimmed the tank. It barely pulled and wouldn’t go through, so just pootled home. Closer to home I gave it a bit and it wouldn’t have it still (25 miles later). Eventually if I kept my foot down, I went past it, through to 5k and it carried on as it should do. But thereafter still misfired at 3500.

I’m going to get my laptop on it tomorrow, but wondered if anyone had experience of this?

Started it this morning and I have the EML light and traction light on. It’s also fluctuating the revs at idle. From 800 to 1200, with the odd misfire. I’ve had to leave it and go back later to code read.

Thanks chaps. Problem is, I am off to Lemans Thursday! I am going to do a diag this afternoon, will that confirm the sensor?

I can then order one and get it in for tues/wed and hope it's that, that fixes it. But I don't have time to replace things 1 by 1 over time, to see if it fixes it.

Part code for sensor: 12147539171

Quick thought. I know sometimes you can run the car without sensors, it'll just use some defaults. Is this the case? So I could unplug it and it'll run ok for a bit? I need to get it back 25ish miles...

Fine to drive it home as it is, the cams will be locked in a default safe position. It's why you experience power in some parts of the rev range but not others and your engine didn't destroy itself when the sensor went bad.
You should get either an intake or exhaust cam position sensor fault, if it's the exhaust one it's very quick to swap.

Thanks Tom. I found that guide myself, happy to do the work, just need to get to home! A friend has DIS, I’ve read that’ll help ID what sensor it is.

My PA soft isn’t telling me about any sensor I unfortunately.

Now throwing up 2D07 throttle valve...

Hmm, that's a tps fault, but my money's still on the cps. Get it plugged into dis. Best of luck!

Made it home! Weirdly if I go through the revs slowly, it goes no problem, only when 'flooring it'. Anyway, I'll just get it on DIS tonight hopefully.

Due to the speed I need these, I'm tempted to buy both sensors, as I havn't done the DIS yet, that's happening tonight.

CotswoldBMW will allow returns, so if it's just 1 sensor, I can return the other.

12147539171 - Cam
13627796054 - Exhaust
12141748398 - O ring

If you haven't plugged it in and need to make sure you'll clear your problem I would also be buying a tps given the fault code you pulled. There's 2 on the engine and they're exactly the same, so 1 will be fine as it would be unlikely for both to go.

Sure that’s genuine? Seems a touch cheap, usually around £60. Might be ok but a lot of stuff is passed off as genuine on eBay....

yea, not so sure myself. They are readily available next day from BMW for £80. I am going to get DIS tonight, see what it says. If it's a cam sensor, replace. If it's TPS, I will order one tomorrow and fit it wed. Or just fit the bloody lot and hope it works!
