Z4m Handbrake Stuck

Hi people,

Just been out to drive my car for the first time in a week and have found the drivers side handbrake completely seized on, tried rocking back and forwards to no avail and hitting the hub with a rubber mallet.

The disk looks rusty, so I'm thinking that could be the cause. This isn't unusual in cornwall due to the marine environment, however this is by far the worst stuck handbrake I've come across.

Has anybody had a similar problem or could give any advice?
 
Oh bugger, the drum type handbrake mechanism is actually hidden inside the disc, so don't be too worried about the outer appearance of rust on the disc. I'd try driving in forwards and backwards whilst trying to pull on and off the handbrake but I'm guessing you've already tried that? Worst case you'll need to remove that wheel, the caliper and then the disc. The disc may be a challenge to remove though with the handbrake on.
 
Handbrake isn't on the disk, its on a drum, so disc condition isn't relevant.

Have you followed the handbrake cable and tried to move the lever on the back of the hub??

I always leave my handbrake off if I'm leaving my car unused for a bit.
 
I had a minor stickiness with the handbrake when I first bought the car - freed it by just driving it off - fortunately it just came off when I was rocking on the drive but it was a bit nerve-wracking. Solution as above - leave in gear and don't use the handbrake if it is going to be parked for any length of time.

Same happened to mine, took an almighty whack with a rubber mallet to free it.
