Engine rebuilt and should be fitted in the next couple of weeks. Polished and ported, Balanced bottom end. Je Pistons, Cat Cams 1301805, Emerald K6 ECU, Vanos removed. New clutch has arrived. Geoff steel airbox ordered. Tilton pedal box ordered.

Which pressure plate is that? did that come from turners? in the kit? if its from the kit, using stock flywheel? then no issues, if you've got the JB SM flywheel.. for the Z4m, get ready for a return.. I've never heard of CAT cams? are they custom? and gotta say Emerald k6 eco doesn't ring a bell either..

Very interested to see this all come together. hope you keep a nice picture log. :D

Yep, you are right. This is the wrong pressure plate, it has already been returned. I uploaded the pic by mistake.
 
Cat Cams are fairly well known in the UK, perhaps not so much for BMW stuff. I think they're based in Holland. It's one of their profiles not custom. You can find the spec here.

What sort of gains would you expect from porting/polishing?

Not a great deal as the head's very good to begin with.

Yes it is possible, but as you’ve said it’s expensive and rebuild will be due in 100 hours, not 100,000 miles :poke:

I'm currently building up a list of things I want to do with my E85 M and while I think 343bhp is enough for me power wise, I really wish I could have about 315-325lbt from it, as I find it's current torque to be a tad lacking next to what I my Impreza P1 was pumping out with the engine turned down for reliability.

You can get more power relatively easily, I'm up to around 380 with a fairly standard engine and bolt on stuff. To get to 400 requires removal of the vanos and some very aggressive cams as a minimum which will make it a pig to drive at low revs (remember the vanos is there to give the car more torque at low revs not more power at high revs). In either of these scenarios to get (much) more torque is not really on the cards. You need a charger of some type.
drive a (tuned) E89 35is if torque is your thing, you might like it...

Are you going to use that clutchplate too with a solid flywheel? I think I use the same clutchplate but I think that too is only suitable for dual mass as it has no springs (maybe thats different for full track cars but wouldnt you rather want a sintered plate?)

I've come across some videos/threads with a supercharged S54 E85/86 M. What I can't remember is what changes were required to the engines internals? From what little I understand, BMW made sure the S54 was built using "high quality" parts for the engines internals, which means if you're using pretty low boost or aiming to just go past 400bhp and keep it less than 450bhp, you won't need to alter too much?

One big problem I faced with my Impreza P1, like so many classic shape Impreza's is the fact the 5 speed gearbox was very prone to blowing up if you took things past 350lbt. The only solution was to go with a 6 speed box, but you then had to swap a lot of the drivetrain/LSD's , which for the P1 was something you didn't want to do, as Prodrive totally changed all of this when developing the P1. They went from electronic to mechanical LSD's etc (not that it is, all that interesting for people on here to find out about). With all this in mind, how much power can the standard drive train take on the E85 M's?

My final annoying question for now is regarding the breaks. I was always told that the first thing you should upgrade on a car, before adding power, is the breaking. With my P1, I was able to get myself 6 pot Alcon calipers , that went over a 330mm 2 parts disc/hub setup from Godspeed Brakes. I then was advised to use EBC Blue'Stuff pads, which required a bit of heat in them before they would work at their full potential. They were totally amazing, as no matter how hard or much braking I was doing, they never once faded on me and I think I even managed to boil the brake fluid when me and a member from my local car club shared my car on a track day.

Beedub gets over 500bhp from his ///MR with (AFAIK) stock intervals. However, he has extensively upgraded the suspension, brakes etc to handle the performance available.
 
Google ESS Stage II supercharger Z4M. It comes with a software to remap the ecu. It’s on my wish list but my wife keeps finding other things (she’d say better things) on which to spend the £10k :D

The ///M track mode is easily programmed and well worth it. There’s a thread about it in the M section. Essentially, it disengages the traction control but keeps the stability programme running. It’s perfect for fast road use, although I prefer both TC and DSC off on the track.

Whilst you’re programming the ECU, I’d recommend switching off the dynamic brake assist too. That disengages the hugely over servoed brake response that occurs when braking immediately after lifting off the throttle.
