Z4M exhaust upgrade project

I have a video!

We did passes with the valves open and valves closed, but stupid me screwed up the valves closed videos and they were just photos instead

It was really interesting listening to the car from outside. Valves closed was much quieter than I thought, but still had a cool, almost exotic sound. Opened was pretty mental - I'll save that for runs with the M Club boys ;)

interestingly it sounds nearly identical to the RPI which you hate so much.....
The issue I had with the RPi was the sound level and the horrible drone. While both may have the same S54 raspy note, even valves open this is not as loud as the RPi. Valves closed there are no similarities and no drone at all

Admire the ingenuity of the design but I don't really think much to the sound. It's like a lot of the replacements exhausts - a sort of harsh bark/fart noise. I genuinely can't think of any aftermarket exhaust that I think has improved the stock sound apart from perhaps the AC Schnitzer/Rebus one.

Actually, it is both louder and more annoying than my RPI exhaust is. Maybe he has never heard the RPI with enough mileage on it to be broken in. And coupes drone more than open cars do, yet my coupe with the RPI doesn't drone.

Obviously the audio has done a very poor job of capturing the sound. Friends who heard both the RPi and this have all commented how much better this sounds,

love my supersprint powerloop setup. Not too loud but still gives it a great sound. All the best with your project :driving:

Why is it that we only seem to have the vuvuzela option? Is it just a characteristic of inline 6s that the exhaust tone isn't very "complex".

Haha I laughed at the vuvuzela comparison!

Sure, inline 6s are never going to have a luscious a sound as an engine with more cylinders, but even within the realm of 6s the S54 seems to be worse than others. I presume the high redline doesn't help!

This exhaust solution of mine is still a bit buzzier than I'd like, so I'm looking into building Helmholtz resonators to filter out some of the higher end noise...
