Z4M Engine Noise / Chatter at Startup

Morning Gents,
Just recently registered to your forum but have been persusing for a while now. Awesome site

Got an unusual noise coming from the engine.

Doesn't sound like the Vanos or "tappet" noise as it is coming from deep inside the engine.

It only occurs on initial startup with a cold engine and lasts for a couple seconds then goes away.

My M has to sit for several hours and then you can hear it again whe you start the engine.

It actually sounds like the main bearings are dry and then the noise goes away as the oil pressure build in the engine.

I have taken it in to the Dealer to invistigate during its first inspection and of course they came back with a statement saying that they found another M displaying the same issue, but will bring the issue up to BMW to decide what to do if anything. Waiting to hear back......

Has anyone had a similar issue and found a resolution or am I to live with it?

That is what I thought. Told the dealer I've not see a similar issue on any of the forums.....The closest thing I have seen was someone had to replace an oil pump but it was not on an M. This has me concerned...or more like paranoid

I wouldn't worry too much. It's all in the mind. I have a Z4MR & everytime I turn the engine off it sounds like a bag of nails being shaken. It actually sounds like the engine is shaking itself to pieces for 3 seconds. The car has only done 18,000 miles & is a peach. Nothing wrong with your car. These ///M engines are bulletproof.

With handbrake already applied, try depressing the clutch pedal when turning off the engine and also when starting it. It`s an old good habit I picked up driving older M cars. It might make a difference, and as SittingBull says, nothing to worry about anyway.

I also do this and never hear any strange noises. I learned this method with my 3.0SI as it really did sound like a bag of spanners when switching the engine off....lol Will need to try it in the M without the clutch depressed to see what it sounds like.

Youngsters know nothing about cars nowadays. When you turn the ignition key you are turning over both the engine & gearbox - unless you depress the clutch pedal whilst starting......

Save your battery - & your starter motor- by holding the clutch down every time you start your car...

I am so conditioned by other cars that would NOT start UNLESS the clutch was in, that I have never attempted to start it without the clutch depressed.

Question to the OP. What are your OCIs?
