Bonjourno,
Oh dear oh dear detailers, my only previous experience of them was having an MR2 utterly destroyed, paintwork speaking, by one in Chesterfield. Long story short the muppet burnt through the paint, didn’t tell me, painted the whole car in dripping black cake icing with so many fish eyes and runs in it it looked like Mcacathur’s Park. Went to court, muppet didn’t even show up, went bust so I couldn’t get any money out of the rat, etc etc.
So I’ve been rather nervous of having anything done since, however knowing the M was in need of some TLC as it’s been standing for a year a bit unloved, I thought who is going to look after my 37k miler, well if he wanted to do it, Mr Z4 M was the obvious choice, an enthusiast in the marque and a long time member on here. PM’s were exchanged in which Byron agreed to take the front bumper off, have it painted due to heavy stone chips, refit it, and carry out a full detail based on my explanation of the paintwork. Now as happy as I am to do any spannering, paint is best left to others and after a price was agreed I dropped it off on a Monday morning. Initially I was struggling to get home after my friend had to go away on suddenly on family business so Byron even offered to take me back home on the Sunday, even though he has family. Anyway I arrived Monday morning to be greeted by Byron, a friendlier more approachable chap you’ll struggle to meet. Upon his first day inspection it was obvious my idea of ‘not bad at all, only light swirling’ of the paint was about as correct as putting an auto box in the M. However Byron didn’t ring up asking for more money, he just went with it and wouldn’t accept any more, the price was the price to him. He kept me up to date pretty much every day with texts and blogs, and when ready for collection he had it under a cover which was a nice touch. The finished car was superb, gone were the swirls and stone chips, superbly painted bumper, the paint looks like new, I’m so pleased with it, it’s reignited my enthusiasm for the car.
What I found with Byron is a guy not looking to raid your wallet, but a friendly, down to earth car enthusiast looking to do what his new business is all about, renovating your paint amongst other things. He’s more than happy to go the extra mile, I just found him really easy to get on with with no hidden agenda. I can only report on what I find, neither to blow sunshine up his ass or be unnecessarily critical. I have zero complaints. I guess the final word is would I use him again, I can only say a resounding YES.
He’s running a new business and obviously has the worries, grief and excitement that that brings, but imho if he carries on like he is he’ll flourish and grow bigger if that’s his aim. I wish him all the very best.
