NO LONGER NEEDED Z4M Coupe

Hi all,

Been a bit of a lurker on here for a few months. But now in a serious situation of actually buying a Z4M.

Not extremely fussed on colour but a Grey or Interlagos Blue would be great, preferably with a Carbon dash and DSP sound system.
Budget is around £18k. Could potentially justify more if vanos and rod bearings have been seen to.

I've seen a few sell privately and dealer for £17- 19k with around 45-60k miles on them. So that's sort of what I'm after.

Based in Bedfordshire, but willing to travel a bit to find the right car. As I've seen so far, a good example is becoming rarer to come by.

Thanks.

I assume from your other posting you are looking for an M Coupe. You need to bear in mind that only 592 were registered in the UK based on this detailed database compiled by someone on here:- https://tonyz4c.z28.web.core.windows.net/index30si.html
And now the youngest ones are 17 years old there aren't ever going to be many for sale with that sort of mileage.

But they are fantastic cars so good luck finding one.

Yes, I've amended the thread title to mention coupe.

I think I would consider a higher mileage if it was evidently well cared for.

Munich Legends has a Imola red one up for sale, but I think someone may have beat me to it...

Thanks.

TBF that Imola one at Munich Legends has done 74K and is up for £20,500 so doesn't really meet miranc12s criteria.

No mention of rod bearing shells having been replaced either but at that mileage I'd be factoring the cost of that in, so then it's a £22K car!

What are your thoughts on the car at ML?

I’ve enquired and they said will carry out the following work before sale:

Read tyres
Wind screen seal
Fix oil leak between Vanos and cylinder head
Rear droplinks
Mot
Oil service (initially they said it would be a inspection 2)
Brake pipes
Respray front bumper
Paint less dent removal (only a few minor dings)
Oil analysis (I’m not sure if one has been done in the past so I’ll have nothing to compare the results to)

Is not sure if it’s priced correctly given the rod bearings, vanos or even a suspension refresh has not been carried out.

You will likely get mixed responses on here a few members have no time for dealers and feel they are not worth it. They are a dealer with a good reputation so would be worth a look.

Not that it’s my car or related to me, personally I would be tempted by the red one on here ( appreciate its higher mileage than you are after) but at £15,000 Ono and having the vanos and rod bearing done that one appears like a good option 🙂

I think 45-60k miles at 17-19 is really low end dealer wise those cars are more like 20-25k. M Roadster prices are more like 14-20k in that bracket.

Sold vs advertised is a different conversation tho.

17-19 would get you a 65+k car privately I would think.

Honestly vanos generally isn't too much of an issue you can have it tested pretty easily had mine done twice and still in tolerance and mine has 81k. Bearings again so many scare threads. The bearings I've seen pulled out over the last 15 years often look the same at 50k and 120k seems most of the wear is done early on.

All personal opinion but it's talked about so much and on this forum for Z4Ms there are 3 cars that come to memory with failure 2 heavily tracked and another that did fail. The actual numbers of failures vs the conversation is certainly one sided.

There are a lot of other element to consider that there are 1000s of threads about on here. If you buy out of right window you could spend 5k without bearings and vanos so make sure paperwork is there.

ML are very thorough with their pre sales inspection so it should be well sorted, I’ve recently both bought and sold a Z4M coupe through them - they did test the vanos on the one I sold- they said that vanos isn’t really an issue with these cars, as Tom said above. They put 4x new Michelin PS4’s on the one I bought, so if they do the same for you then factor that into the price when comparing with others. Their knowledge of these cars and their standard of detail did impress me so I would be happy to buy from them again.

I don’t agree in relation to “you must factor in VANOS/bearings/suspension” etc as a pre- requisite. Look at the car overall and work it from there. It’s a 20 year old car after all. If it still looks mint and the history is there then go for it. Always go for the best you can afford and keep it maintained and used sparingly then it will always sell again. If you want a daily get a high miler for a much lower price. That’s the reason why there is such a wide variance in MR/C prices. I thought £20k from ML to be quite reasonable. I would buy from them.

Personally I wouldn't be averse to buying from a reputable dealer like ML, and it looks like it will be a really well prepared car when they have done the work listed. And Imola Red is my favourite colour on an M!

When I asked Ross at RBM about Vanos his reply was along the lines of "if it ain't broke why fix it?"

That's a fair point tomscott makes about bearing shells too. I had mine done at 76K miles just for peace of mind and half were showing some copper, but I saw a set that had come out of an MR after just 50K and they looked worse than mine. Then again another MR forum member didn't have his done until over 100K miles.
