To further improve gear changes I'm also considering VibraTech engine mounts, would you recommend that for 'fast' road use or do they only make sense on the track?

If you do all your own spanner work, which I do, then modding is a reasonably cheap pastime and the Vibra Technics engine mounts are relatively cheap parts. They make a very significant difference to the handling on its own, as well as making gear shifting easier. So my answer would be, you will see a noticeable benefit for fast road use by doing that mod and you will get even more enjoyment out of your car the better you make it. 8)

If you do this mod, you should also consider changing the gearbox oil to Amsoil MTF - you need 2 quarts.

I certainly do all the spanner work myself, big part of the fun of owning such a vehicle :D

So even if the original mounts are not worn there will still be a benefit in using the VT mounts, that's good info.
Did you also replace the gearbox mounts?

ps. sorry for hijacking the thread :P

There's only so much you can say about clutch stops.

My OEM engine mounts look brand new but the Vibra Technics mounts make a very big difference. I don't see any need to change the gear box mounts, because if the engine is restrained, the gear box will also be more restrained because it's bolted to the engine.

Changing the gearbox mounts as well was discussed a little while ago and the consensus was that they are adequate for the task whilst the engine mounts certainly are below par.... I'm looking forward to making my own clutch stop now too

No worries... all very interesting and something else added to my list! How long does it take to fit the engine mounts?

I can't be bothered messing around at my hardware shop, so just bought this clutch stop. £10 shipped from the states. The guys sells them on lots of the BMW forums in the States.

Will let you know how it goes.

great buy!!!!

I got a clutch stop about a year ago. I remember mentioning it on the forum and someone slated it as only being for 'gullible Americans'. I think it's great though. I'm no engineer but if if you eliminate some of the variability then you've got to get more consistent results. Now if only I could get a smooth 1st to 2nd change in when the engine is cold!

I read all about how much better is was using the clutch stop so I bit and got one for real cheap. I adjusted it to 10-15mm below the clutch grab point. I really didn't like it, the clutch pedal comes an abrupt stop and just didn't feel right... I ran it like that for a month and just never got used ti it. I adjusted it as low as it would go and liked it much better as now the clutch pedal doesn't come to an abrupt stop since my foot pushes the clutch down just before the stop.. Maybe driving a clutch for 40 years without a stop, I'm just too used to my foot memorizing how far I need to push a clutch. Anyway, the mod was a bust for me, it's all about person preference. Now installing the M5 weighted lighted shift knob, that put a smile on my face... :D

I can't believe I ordered one all the way from the US when this has been staring me in the face for the last 2 years disguised as part of a stair gate :)

Just make sure your little'un doesn't fall down the stairs because you've ruined the stair gate for a more consistent clutch response!?!

you can definately remove the whole thing and the hoses will mate, i knocked the metal restictor out which improved it a lot although it is still a small hole so may get better still if i remove the whole cdv
