Z4M - carrying a few too many lbs?

Vanne said:
savings were 15.3 kgs. carbon roof was 1.9kgs before clear coat, and the oem e86 roof weighs about 17.3 kilos. There is a hell of a lotta weight in the standard oem battery and tray.. 25kgs savings (thats a few big macs)

Decent savings. I'd be wary of the capacity of a lightweight battery, but I've seen people install a couple of Brailles in parallel across the rear bulkhead, which is a really neat installation and probably gives you a bit of safety margin for trips abroad etc.

i also have the tv/media system box on the bulkhead, that puppy is at least 3 kgs.
I have the braille 11lbs batt, its big enough. But it does need to live on a tender, or hooked up to another batt while in storage.. (should last 2 weeks without anything hooked up to it)

So shouldn't be too much of a drama. Its not a daily driver for me.

:scratchhead: you sure about that? 17kg for a small roof panel seems quite a lot (a lot more than a wing for instance) and everyone else I can find on the internet who has done this says they weigh about 7 and the saving is around 5kg max?
If it really is that much then great, I'll get it done!

quoting numbers from another weight thread, i asked that same question, ill let you know what the guys say.. i could ofcourse pull out my roof and chuck it on the scales, but id rather not make a huge mess in my parts room.

That guy Z4MGT4 has just ordered a BMW one from the other thread , I'll drop him a pm and see if he can get the package weight..

Pretty sure it's steel, but all the same, I find it unlikely to weigh the same as a battery!

i recently went to a body shop to do a correction on a loose roof panel from an rs3... which is considerably bigger... the arse holes left me to lug it around it was awkward but if it weighed more than 10kg ill eat my shoe. No way the z4 roof is 17kg.. just no way at all.

No, it’s aluminium as is the bonnet.
That’s surprises me, but I'm not near my car at the moment, you tried sticking a magnet on yours, or what makes you say it is ali? If it is indeed aluminium then it most definitely won't be weighing 17kg that is for sure!
Geoff steel seem to think it's steel too, certainly the m3 one I removed was.

No its steel. weighed mine today, its 9 KGS. (mine was 9.0, as it had been painted black) so total weight loss is 7KGS. plus or minus a few grams. Still a pretty darn good weight savings for up top.

My bad for quoting said 17Kgs.. the other pieces on the list are sound though.

Cheers Vanne, that clears that up then. It's definitely a mod on the list... miss my m3 one, they do look good :)

Shame we both never seem to have got the special aluminium edition we've been TOLD they got in Norway :D

Thats right I was misinformed by an old magazine road test.. :)
The old magnet test showed its certainly steel, while the bonnet of course is aluminium.
My bad!

i tell you what after removing the rear boot lid.... my god.. now that does weight something... Easily 35kg in roadster form, if someone developed a carbon lid... this would drop the weight massively !! The stock bonnet is a lovely piece.

I do agree it's a bit of a podge for a sports car. But as said it is actually lighter than most. Plus has that wonderful engine and throttle response to make up. Having two Mx5s and an MR in the family I can say the MR, despite being the lard arse, changes direction best. :D
I realise i need to get out more,, but what is an MR ?

The Z4 ///M Roadster actually has no Z4 badges any where on it. Just ///M badges. 16 if I recall. :D

Hence both it and the Z3 ///M Roadster are commonly referred to as MR.

Though it is the steering, Brakes, suspension, and that Glorious engine that really make it an ///MR.

so an MR is an M roadster.. gotcha :)

Agree my ZMR feels more like my Crombie coat cf to my Eunos which feels more like my Barbour Jacket
However whenever I wear my Crombie it feels rather special in it -bit like my ZMR
