Z4M as 911 replacement?

It looks like my 1992 911 (964 C2 coupe Tiptronic) will be going very soon. It's on a brokerage deal, and stands to make me a few quid after 3 years of ownership.

I've got an E61 as a daily driver, and a 2.2 Z4 for when it isn't raining.
I'm thinking about replacing the 2.2 with a Z4M roadster, which I'm hoping will fill the gap left by the 964, and not cost me too much in depreciation.
On paper, the M will give similar performance, but I'm not sure about the ride and general driveability. Not much chance of finding an M for sale locally (west Cornwall), or even this side of Bristol, so I'll be looking at contacting a couple of dealers to see if they can source one for me, and take the 2.2 in part exchange.

What do you guys think?
Is the M really a lot harsher than a 2.2 on 18s?

It'd be great if I could find a forum member locally with an M who'd be willing to take me for a spin.

Ride on the M\\\ Roadster is just fine in my book. I think it's less harsh than in my Mazda3 Sport.

Where are you?

More than happy to take you out for a spin. As long as you only have one head and 5 didgets on each hand. (The deep West eh)

Well if you fancy a mini Z4 meet on Saturday the Weather looks ok. I'm in Saltash. Could meet you near Bodmin and take you out in the MR. Or you could bring your Porker and we could do a little civilized back to back road testing. :driving:

£10k more than I paid for it 3 years ago. I think it's a fair price for a hassle-free sale. Covers everything I've spent on running the car for 3 years, plus £5k profit.
I didn't set out to make money, I was just looking to fulfil a long-held dream without too much depreciation.
Thing is, the car doesn't get used much, now that I've got the 2 BMWs. When I was looking at current selling prices to figure out the agreed insurance valuation, I was shocked to see what dealers were asking. It made me a little wary of actually driving it.

Funnily enough, I was in Saltash this morning. That's where the dealer is. Hopefully he will be collecting the 964 from me tomorrow.

A meet in Bodmin sounds good, just need to check that I'm free on Saturday. Do you have a time preference?

I changed from a slightly modified 911SC to my ///M and it's in a different league altogether, would I have another Aircooled 911? Yes I would, in favour of the ///M, not at all unless it was a 911RSR rep 8) :driving:

Actually yes, it is metallic grey. Previous owner was in the Exeter area.

When I bought it, I paid top money for a very good car. I had a choice of gambling on a private sale around £16 or 17k, or buying a straight car with no hidden nasties from a respected dealer for a fair bit more. I think I made the right choice, because the only mechanical parts I've needed are one drop link and a set of driveshaft boots. The place that sold it to me is now going to broker it. It'll probably sell for a fair bit over £35k. Crazy money for a supposedly unpopular Tip 964, at one point the least-loved 911.

It's a great car, served me well, but time for someone else to enjoy it. Hopefully it won't end up as a garage queen.

Don't say anymore mate , you're making me ill :P my C2 tip had 125k on when i sold it for £13500 , 3 previous owners & i bought from a lady who got it for her 50th & sold it to me closely before retiring at 60 , a real character
I did make a few ££ on it but would gladly buy it back tonight for the £13500 :(

Typical. Which dealer I'm about 200 yards from Roger Young, but they are more new Jags and Land Rovers.

I have no plans Saturday, Mrs G is at work PM ,so mid afternoon would prevent any fall outs with the Mrs. Won't be pushing it too hard, as I'm having new Disks and Pads fitted tomorrow, so will be bedding them in. How about 2pm at The Borough Arms Car Park, PL31 2RD. There's a simple triangular route out and back from there. Up to Camleford and back down the best section of the coast road, towards Wadebridge. Hopefully decent weather and light traffic. Or there are loads of quite roads across Bodmin moor. That are pretty unforgiving on firm suspension, so would make a good place to form an opinion.

I went from a beautiful 993 C2 to a Z4M. Both wonderful cars and quite different in character.

The ride is perhaps slightly stiffer, but it really depends what you are used to. It's more forgiving than a C63 on 19s though.

The typical BMW over servoed brakes do annoy somewhat and you have to get used to drive by wire, whilst decent on the M, is not obviously as responsive as having a cable yanking them open.

Fuel economy is quite similar and whilst you might not make any return on the zed, buy wisely and you shouldn't loose either.

This was quite a rare car, being an earlier VR model with the shorter gearbox. It also had sports seats, hifi, great spec tbh.

I would take a 964 over a Z4M.

As much as I loved my M coupe the Porsche has more character. I would keep the Porsche and replace the Z with a Z4M and keep both neither are likely to loose you any money any time soon both are appreciating.

The Ms are great cars the Porsches are something else, especially the older ones.

Well, mine won't be gong to be sold ever. Comfort access to get in so I should be ok when I am 80 in about 30-odd years 8)

I had a 993 Carrera as well; given a choice I would certainly take the 993, but they aren't exactly in the same price bracket these days.

hi busy, hoping to get in this weekend if its ok , our crew has fragmented a bit so not been getting in as much as we used to. bought a gath helmet after riding the reef at porthleven, tried it out at harlyn and got stabbed in the sciatic nerve by the nose or a fin, five weeks out of the water. i get the usual twingy back from 25 years moving pianos and antiques , but this was like being plugged into the mains,!! nasty, hope to see u on the beach sometime. ps I bet the porsche guy near saltash is adrian crawford, out on the saltash to callington rd near st mellion, a barn full of 911's. his father Pat, I think , had the harley davidson dealership in saltash in the seventies.

Ouch that sounds painful. Good to here your mended. I was in at Harlyn on Sunday Morning. Not Epic but a decent size & good fun, if a bit windy. :D The life guards reminded me why I surf in the winter, when they came over to Rescue me, as I was sat on a rock, drinking Tea from my Flask, having just got out over by the Caravan site on the left of the bay. (Sorry but some of them are pill#cks) Hopefuly catch you at the beach soon.
