Hi everyone, I'm from Canada and recently accesed this site and learned a lot about my car, Thanks to eveyone!!!

I own a 2007 Z4M roadster which now has 28000 km. I purchased it last year when it had 16000km.

As soon as I got it (16000 km) I was in the dealer for inspection etc.... I had noticed that the engine block was oily underneith the head gasket on the headers side and on a pretty large surface. The techs were a bit perplex on the origin and chose to clean and wait til next visit.

On my next visit (24000km) the engine block was again oily. and the origin seams to be the head gasket. They tell me this is normal and that all BMW sweat oil here and there... nothing to worry about and that they won't do anything until it leaks or drips on the floor... my warranty is ending in a month!!!!!

I have had various issues so far but this one worries me, can anybody input on this ''normality''

Thanks

Guy

Hello there Guy and welcome to the forum.

In my experience, this is not normal. The engine in my car has no oil seeping out of it anywhere (although it is a bit tricky to see under the throttle bodies on the intake side).

Plus I assume that if there is a gradual seepage from somewhere, the engine will appear to be 'using' a bit of oil over time. My engine hasn't used a drop of oil in the three years I have owned the car and I think most M owners on the forum find theirs are the same.

Also, your engine still has a pretty low 'kilometerage' - I wouldn't expect any engine of that age to be seeping oil from anywhere.

I hope you can get this resolved to your satisfaction.

Not normal, not acceptable. As above, my engine is as clean as when it left the factory with 0 oil usage and 0 drips anywhere.

I agree with the above posts - In 50,000 miles my ///M has never used a drop of oil, never leaked a drop of oil, never 'sweated' a drop of oil.
I would print a copy of this page and take it with you to BMW as evidence that this is not normal behaviour for our engine.
Good luck...oh, and welcome

same! worth serious investigation before that warrenty ends and it should be riased to the workshop manager that this was highlighted previously

Are you sure its coming from the head gasket and not the rocker cover gasket (is it above the headers or below)?? I Don't mean to be patronising, its just a lot of people get the two confused! Rocker gasket leaks are quite common in BMW 6's and could be due to PCV failure, especially in cold climates.

if it is indeed the Head gasket, it had failed as it no longer maintains full compression and needs fixing. You should at least put your complaint in writing to express the fact that you have noticed the problem within warranty (try photos too) just in case they don't fix it and it deteriorates further. Is there another BMW garage nearby where you could seek a second opinion?

As above, never topped up the oil between changes in 30K miles. No oil anywhere on engine that i can see. I did have a few drips onto the floor a couple of years ago and it ws traced to a loose r blanking plate on the side of the engine block, just needed tightening up which was done under warranty.
