Z4coupe engine noise

Hi guys new to the fourm obviously im aware of the 3.0 straight 6 and the vanos can sometimes be noisy i went to view a coupe today on 85k fsh and was clean enough was up for 10k but i offered 8 as it was high mileage and needed brakes and the engine sounded noisy from cold anyway they said no so i wasnt to upset really but was nice to sit in one
I know it must be hard to explain what to listen for but has anyone got a video of good or bad noise to listen for maby it was just me but after running for 1min it settled down and wasn't so noisey are most noiser from the cold start or make the same noise from cold as they would from warm ?

My previous 3.0 was really quiet and smooth whether warm or cold, no rattles at all with the bonnet closed. With the bonnet open, as you expect you could hear normal mechanical noise but again nothing noticeable or outstanding.

Thanks tom this you could hear pritty well i dunno if it was because it been sitting for a few weeks or months i dunno but defiantly sounded like there was to much noise to me even compared to a 330 i had with 120k on few years ago
 
Ya pretty noticeable as well sounded like a weak tapping noise on tick over was stone cold as well
 
i think the hydraulic lifters can be noisy until they receive an oil bath on start up, its not suposed to be destructive, just annoying!

Have to say , 73k in 3.0 ltr and only noise is a split second on start up as lifters fill with oil.

I wouldn't take anything with engine noise, there's plenty of choice :D
 
This has the N52 engine in though which explains the tappets on start up. if it lasts more than two seconds I would find another car.

Some say it doesn't do any damage. I don't believe this. But also when you come to sell if this noise is evident it will be hard to move on.
 
Just a quick update for anyone who needs a bit of info in future

This one i went to see was on 85k and had a heavy tapping noise and i mean you can hear it in the car easy and when you poped the bonnet it was very notable

I picked up a nice example on 42k 2-3 days ago and its as quite on cold start up and there is hardly if any tapping noise's so when you go to buy one just listen for a quite engine with no loud engine noises :D

These engine are good for crazy mileage so dont leave mileage put you off if the price is right and its sound engine :driving:

You still have to be careful, as a very quiet engine is not always a good one. It might simply mean that all the tolerances are at their tightest, or that a seller has put thicker/thinner oil in to temporarily disguise a problem.

Very noisy or very quiet I'd be suspicious of, and want to have an expert look/listen.
