Z4C to 911 possabilty

Apologies for hijacking but I've a related question...

What's is the length / time of a 'short journey'. I always ensure on any trip the car is reaching temperature (only do a trip that's at least 20 minutes by car) and never above 3.5 k revs till the oil clock is at 11.

If it's less I walk or take another car. I also do interim oil changes every 7.5k.

Am I doing as much as can be expected to achieve good results?

Oh and Tom, your M makes your dad's car look rubbish. If I was him I'd be narked my boy was driving a better looking machine than me :thumbsup:
 
The scaremongering about Porsche engine reliability I always find amusing knowing loads of people with 993's ( know not as many problems bar rust as they're old now!), 996's and 997's and have owned a 996 and 2 997's myself.....not known of a single incident where anyone's engine has gone bang or had the infamous RMS/IMS issue......

From my own experience, having owned them for about 7 years and 50k miles mine needed very little more than routine maintenance........a few things were covered under warranty (if going for a 997 I'd recommend having the OPC warranty for peace of mind).

Servicing was not expensive as only every 2 years/20k miles on the 997, and even the Turbo wasn't that bad - fuel, insurance and other random consumables were all reasonable too......performance was very good, esp in the Turbo..........and completely different to Z4 I owned....
 
Lucky you, keep on being amused - stick that on the porsche 911 forum and see what response you get!

Just got an sl merc (hence partners z4 traded in for cooper s) and surprisingly enough, prefer it to the 911, never had so many people comment so much on a car.

Just going out to wash them now,my mate used to clean his motorbike with baby wipes, anybody on here........

I suppose it all depends if your buying new or second hand..

You would have to be very unlucky to have the engine pop in the first 5 years or 50k i guess,although there are many many cases of that happening....But if your budget will not allow for an newer car and your into a car that is 5-15 yrs old then you could be really in trouble if you decide to take a 911,boxster or Cayman on..

I dont get the blind faith,fan boy or honour the badge brigade.....If something is bad,its bad. Whatever badge it has on the front..

I know all about the inherent faults of the watercooled Porsche,s but thought the chances of it catching you out narrowed as the miles went up ?
IE upwards of 80k was a safer bet than under 40k ? Still have to be a gambling man & enjoy broken sleep though :oops: nothing quite like the Porsche paranoia in the early hours & the trepidation every time you turn the key from cold :wink:
 
Ah well, Depends what fault your talking about Andy..

IMS bearing is that way..Bore scoring and D chunking goes up as the mileage does..

So in reality you never get a clear run..But you pays your money and takes your chance.

It's a 13 plate sl350, doing 40k a year so comfort was more of an issue.

Thought it would be underpowered but drive it differently - always been a bmw man mostly so merc was usually not considered, time will tell!

I have - I'm a member of a few Porsche forums - that's how I know the problems aren't as widespread as some people claim..........

There is an admission on the 991uk site that there is issues with the 977 engine as expressed in this topic - there is some balanced views but the bottom line is that there is a risk with the engines.

I can't vouch for the Jag XKR enough, I LOVE mine!
People presume they are an old mans car and never think of modding them... I broke all the rules and it turns that old man cruiser into a proper UK muscle car:

I just chopped my 996 C2 in last year for Z4MR had it since 2005 wanted a change fancied convertible but just didnt want a boxster no 911 owner is going to gladly change for boxster it just feels so wrong !

Anyway thought I had made a massive mistake when I got Z4 really missed 996 they drive so so differently but having got used to Z4 I really love it now its a hoot to drive IMHO if you get a good one they are both fantastic driving machines despite being so similar in performance in driving dynamic terms (as you would expect) there leagues apart !
