I must admit that I have been known to lock the car and then when putting the key in my pocket accidentally touch the unlock button. When you got back to the car was the drivers side unlocked. If it was I bet that is what you did. Have you tried to replicate this ie lock the doors and then go back after a while and see if they open. It could possibly be a fault but then a poltergist would need to have opened the door.

Same thing has just happened to my z4.
No damage at all. Driver door left open by thieves. Designer shades stolen. Compartment under passenger seat open and the original first aid kit left in the middle of passenger floor.
I'm at a loss to why the factory fitted alarm didn't go off.
I know for a fact someone for into my zr because if anyone still has the original first aid kit you will know that it's a tight fit in that under seat compartment, so it couldn't of just opened and jumped out into the middle of the floor.
My boot was not open and nothing taken from in there.
Car alarms are notoriously fickle things, not unusual for them not to go off.

How long have you owned and do you have both keys?
Does your car auto lock if you unlock and don’t open any doors or boot?

The Z4 system is not the same as the keyless entry systems used by modern cars, which are more susceptible to intercept at longer ranges.
Ironically being older there is less chance of someone cloning the key as they would still need the physical key blade to start the car.
To go to the trouble of intercepting your signal just on the off chance you may have some valuables in the car, the likelihood is low.
I would probably suggest that you’ve left it unlocked and someone has gone down the route of just trying door handles.

So....
Car criminals can access on average 1 in 50 cars by bouncing a signal off you car key fob inside your home with a 50 Meter range, this sends the signal to a scanner fob that a criminal can use to unlock your car. They can not drive it away as they need the key in the ignition. They take valuables that you may think you have miss placed.
I was recommended to buy a farada pouch, or keep my keys in a metal box over night.
The police had received 3 phone calls from my area that day.
I've just bought the car 3 weeks ago drove it 4 times so I'm sure I lock it, I wait for the lock sound.

They would have to be mighty quick as the signal changes every x seconds.
On newer cars they get the signal from your fob whilst you walk away and open the car that way, but that is because they are transmitting all the time which is not the case for the E85/E86 though.

I would agree the most likely scenario was left unlocked or key button pressed whilst keys in pocket. I was constantly unlocking my G29's boot when I first got it by pressing a button whilst key was in a pocket, a key case solved this.
Most probably an opportunist then trying car doors that opened it.
