Z4 worth the high insurance?

Its just a case of looking around. Reason I only have 2 ync is becuase when I was at uni i didnt run a car.

But when I bought the Z4M I had my previous BM for 22 months so still had 1 ync and upgraded my insurance for £100 for the last two months on the Z4M before I needed to renew... so youl find something. Just try all the specialist companies. For me I wanted one sooner rather than later lol!

Ye the 350zs are good cars but not a touch on the Z4s but would still have the 3ltr over the 2.5ltr. The 350zs are expensive to run as you said and the build quality isnt great either youl find the insurance more as well because they appeal to certain people. The insurance on the Z4Mc is also low because there are only about 560 in britain and appeal to a specific crowd and are not well known, so the amount that have been written off is a lot lower. The insurance difference for me between the Z4Mc and the E46 M3 was £1100 for me! cheapest I could find was £2200!! with the same company etc Because the M3s are so cheap they are in the idiot territory so many have been bought and written off by younger drives which ruins it for the rest of us.

Also BMW are doing some rediculous deals because they want to get rid of cars seems to be working read in autocar today their revenue stream has grown 6% in 2011.

Have a look at the thread I created when I bought mine for info on all the stuff they threw in for free. Totted up to about 3.5k which I would have had to spend on top which was nice. 2 year warranty, inspection II, full all round wheel refurb, new pads all round, an extra £1500 trade in on my car and £1000 off the car. Really really pushed because I knew they wanted to get rid of it and I wanted everything I could get!

I am 21 with 4 years no claims and i have the 3.0 with a couple of mods and pay just over the grand mark. mines with admiral on a multi car policy with another car says i do 5000 miles a year. and i have 500 voluntery excess. it is on a driveway in the middle of norfolk. so reasonable area. I got that quote about 2 months ago. so you would be better if you could lower ya millage a lil bit and bring up your excess. they can also check if you have access to another car it can void your insurance if they realise.

Sounds like you got a very good deal - but when buying new the dealer are always up for throwing in some freebies, even on lower priced cars - it just proved how much margin is on the car at normal retail price!

Whats the MPG like on a 3.0, I drive almost always from town to town or just around town so I guess thats urban, rarely get onto the motorways. I dont want something too thirsty. Whatcar also said go for the 2.5, not the 3.0 lol.

Do BMW have like a used network like what Vauxhall have?

Sounds like my area must be a shitter! All houses in my street are 4 bed detahced though so its not some counsil estate!

I am probably going to buy nearer the summer, I will be a year older and have another years no claims (24 y/o and 5 ncb) which should help. Hopefully then the insurance premiums will be on the down rather than the up. Id love to have one for April/May though for the start of the good weather.

Mine was an approved used BMW 4 years old.

BMWs network is its approved used just go online you can check them all out over the UK.

They are not bad round town but all cars are thirsty round town. Might be lucky to get high 20s like 28 round town. My M gets about 22 round town 28-32 on the motorway

Well ye the 6 cylinder is a lot nicer but you do pay a bit more than you do for the fiesta... probs a fair amount lol different car.

These cars wernt cheap new, buying them is not the problem its running them, but for the size of engine and performance they don't cost a lot in my opinion. Servicing isnt cheap but not expensive probably about average but a lot more than you will be used to with the Fiesta. But im fairly used to the costs so it doesn't really bother me. My old car was just a 320 but it was the WTCC version 320SI had a hand built engine no VVT, so every oil service the pistons needed to be timed. For an average oil and brake fluid change it cost me £850. Had to have a new cylinder head gasket because it split (£100) when they removed to carry out the service and also the time it takes took 5 hours 'apparently' at (£55 an hour) then the brake fluid and the oil. Which is expensive so moving from the 320 to the Z4M same costs but twice the performance. Makes me a lot happier 8).

As long as you are aware of the costs then the change wont be too surprising when it comes to service and repair.

Price comparison sites are for divvies

I'm obviously one of the site divvies, got my 17 year old insured in her first car for £700 including commuting, my wife's motor for £124 and my Z4's costing me £243 with business use, doh what a fool :headbang:

On a serious note, it pays to really fine tune the cover and details (like job some of which are ambiguous) on the comparison sites, e.g. I can't work this one out, M&S insurance were cheapest for my wifes car, quotes were coming in HIGHER where I specified a voluntary excess of £100 than when I specified zero voluntary excess (which usually lowers the premium)? weird.

Then it's highly likely you could have got it significantly cheaper still, either through using brokers or going direct and using cashback sites to get a bit more off.

But the difference is more marked for us younger drivers :P, because your risk rating is already quite low anyway, so there's less margin to cut into.

:headbang: indeed.

It's been around before but here's the postcode loading list for those that haven't seen it.

Haha well Im not 100% for a normal Z4 but the Z4Ms are significantly more expensive. An inspection II is between 6-900 depending where you go £750 is about average I think for the M. Im guessing a normal Zd will be around half what a Z4M is about £300-£500 depending on which inspection you need. Not sure about oil and brake fluid servicing but the services are 15k apart so.. not like it has to be done regularly in fact when I had mine done I doubt I will get to the next inspection before changing it.

For the price you are looking at im guessing you will be buying an average milage car with 40-50k on it so youl be looking at an Inspection II at around the 50k mile mark, but if it is close I would have the dealer do it as a matter of corse instead of getting 2k miles down the road and forking out for it. Thats why I had mine done, slightly prematurely but it had lowish milage for its age saved me a £1000, it doesn't cost the dealer that anyway so they will do it as a value added extra to make you buy the car.

Road tax - £265 for your bracket depending on the age pre march 06 maybe cheaper I know the 3.0si is £265 (because I was about to buy one until I decided to go the hole hog)

Tyres - on 18s around £700 for a good set dont want to put a crap set on a powerful car, depends on your preference and if you want bigger a lot buy 19" fills the arches.

Then your insurance I recon you will be able to find it for around £1000.

Also mods... Most people put aftermarket springs on the cars because the OEM BMW ones arent much good... Eibacks and H&Rs good value

My Z4M is £440 tax, 19" wheels so £1000 for a good set every 12-15k miles (or 2 years), £1000 for the servicing every 2 years I would predict, £1000 for the insurance, so costs me £1440 to run per year without fuel add an £1900 for 8000 miles, but wont do much more than 5-6k. Then say I put £500 away per year for servicing. But like I said the only thing I will need with the milage is an oil service in another 12500 miles at about £400 it will need a service by the time I need to sell it so will sell it needing the service. So doesn't cost me much more than £3000 a year to run, tax and insure. It has a 2 year warranty so no need to worry about repair.

So you will be looking at half that. At 8k milage per year you will need tyres every 2 years (depending how you drive it) a service every 2 years (every 15k miles) usually oil is half way between, obviously tax and insurance. Averaging around 35mpg at current fuel prices will cost you around £1450 for 8k miles

As long as you know these costs then there will be no shocks. But It will cost you this much with any car you buy with this size engine, you can also always take it to BMW specialists to be serviced because its cheaper but buyers like stamps so my M will only get BMW stamps.

Worth every penny in my opinion! Love my car to bits couldnt have bought a better one... well would have been nice to keep four seats but you have to treat yourself every once and a while ;)!

Also It would seem im in bracket A as a CA postcode... so I dont know look of the draw I suppose keep looking

F* for F****** expensive for me too. Don't you just love London! Time to move out to the suburbs I think.

What are these brokers people keep talking about - any links?

Tomscott. You mention you have a warranty. How much to you pay for that if you don't mind me asking, or is it some sort of extended warranty from purchase?
