Z4 won't jump start

All,

After a fortnight resting my Z4 whimpered and died when i tried to start it.

I dragged over my wifes car to jump from her battery and with everything in place the Z4 still wouldnt spark. all i got was a clicking from the engine bay (starter solenoid?) and then a wheeze. Interestingly, the sidelights came on, as did radio despite neither of these being left on after the last drive. On the dash the ABS light illuminated as well.

Could my wifes little fiat be providing insufficient power to jump the Z4, or is there something more fundamental at fault?

The car is a 07 Z4C 3.0 30k miles, original battery.

Next step will be new battery to see if that revives but i had thought a jump would have worked.

The fiat battery lane would probably not be enough to start the Z the starter motor sounds like it may also be "tired".

Did you have the engine running on the Fiat ? Did you have the revs up above 1500rpm where the alternator can support a great output ?

I thnk a new battery or indeed a decent jump pack would show if you have aroblem with the starter motor as well.

Make sure your wife's car engine is running, and maybe rev it a little to give more voltage. Also make sure you connect +ve to +ve!
 
Thanks both - yes i had connected correctly and had the Fiat running (i didnt increase the revs though which is a valid suggestion).

Presently awaiting a visit from a friend with bigger battery to come and give it a try :-) Failing that new battery.

They need a heck of a load to be able to turn over. On my old 3.0, when my battery died I could not use a portable starter - which works fine on my Golf.
 
Probably just not enough juice coming out of a small car and though thin leads to both put some energy into the battery and turn over a big 3.0 lump.

I have some real heavy duty leads, connect them for a minute or so onto the dead car with the donor car engine running. Try then and always works that way.

Make sure you turn off lights, heaters, etc. too.
