Z4 Wipers only work if I use the screen wash

Hi there
I currently have a problem with my Z4 M 2007 wiper blades where they don't work on any setting that I choose on the stalk (about a month ago I realised that one of the settings no longer set the blades wiping..... But all the others did, so have just been using the other available options) but yesterday none of them work anymore....... However if I squirt the washer fluid the wipers go on for the normal 3 swipes as they should do so it can't be the motor. I've checked the fuse in case it was on a separate one to the washer jets (was grasping at straws!! And it didn't do anything) do you think it could be the relay? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My garage had never heard of that happening so are going to charge me for some diagnostic tests to see if it highlights the problem, but if it's the relay I might be able to buy one and fix it myself as that doesn't sound too hard to do. Plus they can't fit me in for a week. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

Could be grease on the contacts. Though those symptoms are not typical of that common Z4 problem. I'll find you a link.

Edit:

Take a look here.

Easy enough to do, to illiminate this from the possibilities of even sort it.

Thanks for your advice guys - Do you think it could still be the stalk if that still works to spray the washer fluid by pulling it backwards? I'm not really sure how all these things work? I'm reluctant to try and take all the stuff off to see if its grease on the contacts as don't think it would be that as the wipers work fine when the fluid is sprayed - So does no one think it could be the relay? How easy is it to replace the stalk if thats the problem do you think and any idea on price to get that done?
Thanks once again

Thanks for your replies. Just for future reference if anyone else has the same thing..... It was the wiper stalk..... Got a used one off ebay for £7 and its all working again now (fingers crossed it stays that way)
