z4 vs boxster s

Hi,

Comparison should be 3.0 to Boxster S, they have similar performance.

What a nice choice to have mate, with either car you won't go wrong! It's down to a feeling you get when you stand in front of each car and drive them, just see.

If you want a more roar experience get a Z4, it's a roadster! Looks better IMO too. Lower costs etc. It's not another Porsche I guess.

I did the les mans trip this year and there were loads....baa baa, I seemed to have the only Z4 that felt good!

You cant really diss a Boxster S, the drive is so poised, thats why its had so many great reviews. Compared to the Z4 it's a different kind of drive, more precise...

All this crap about a poor mans 911, rubbish tbh, you get a fantastic car. I've never understood the snobby attitude about the Boxster.

Having said that, the Z4 did it for me, and I've driven both and felt great in both but it was a little bit more wolf, whereas the Porsche was more fox for me lol

I've had this choice twice and never ended up with a Boxster. The 'S' is a great car and I'd have a well specced 06 ahead of a similar Z4 3 litre. But you will pay a lot more for the Porsche.
The Z4M is still cheaper than the equivalent Boxster S and is a much more involving drive, more fun, more of an event :thumbsup: . Nice choice to have!
 
Performance wise the Z4M is well ahead of a boxter s; so i would also agree a similar comparison would be 3.0.

My mate has a new cayman; and imo if i had to pick a MC or a cayman; i'd be sorry to say but the cayman would win.

Also one comparison which is missed out; a porsche keyring or a bmw keyring; if you into the sort of events which involve pulling random keys from a bowl that badge can make a big difference :rofl:

I'd go for the one that you enjoy driving the most... or the one you prefer the look of - depending on what you want from it.

The good thing about Porsche, there are a lot of well established decent specialists for servicing, just as an example this is one a friend uses:
http://www.wrightune.co.uk - have a look at their service menu! OPCs charge a lot, the indis aren't too bad IMO.

I do think the 987 is nicely finished inside, the S doesn't sound too bad and has proper sports car brakes. As has been said, the suspension setup is fantastic for rapid A-B road progress - where I think it would give an M for it's money. This car is the benchmark for a reason. Poor mans' 911? Often thought that Z4 (non-M) / 350Z Roadster / S2000 have a look of poor mans Boxster :fuelfire:

All of that said, I looked at a bunch of Boxsters (along with S2000s) and then bought a Z4 - glad I did, where I live every other car seems to be a Boxster or 911. Plus people less likely to think you're a cock in a Z4. Mostly though I prefer the look of the Z4 and the fact that you have to hustle the Z more than you would a Boxster to get similar results. Also, the Boxster was a lot more for a similar age of car.

I had that choice...there was no competition! The ///MC is by far the more involving, more thrilling drive each and every time :D
 
Weirdly i just parked next to a Boxster S at the gym. Must say even though this one was not standard, it did look quite nice :D

Cayman is a bit marmite imo, personally they are growing on me and i love the newer ones. But never driven one as yet, so could not comment.

Did the boxster have issues with the suspension though? And the whole lot needs to be replaced, which costs something like 2k iirc?
 
I reccon Clarkson prefers the Z4 by looking at his Top Gear reviews on these two cars. Check it out perhaps.

My point in making the comparison to the M Roadster is based on price. On this side of the pond for example a 2006 Boxster S will cost about $4,000 more than a 2006 M Roadster. If you are willing to spend the cost for a used Boxster then save $4,000 and go for the M Roadster which preforms better and IMO looks better.
 
I would have the boxster all day long, although more expensive and waiting for the happy times to return! I had the 911 steering wheel,

How can you be so sure about the superiority of S54 vs N52?! I mean, is the criterion of your statement only the power and higher rev or there is more? I know why I bought my Zed with N52B30 engine (I bought it brand new with all features that I wanted)!

Exactly. IMO nobody who has driven a 987 can say that. The 997 is light years ahead and fabulous to drive, but it damn well should be - it's in a completely different price and size class. The Boxster is an excellent car in it's own right and more than capable of matching a Z4 (if not beating it for some). It depends what you like in a car really. Odd how nobody says a Z4M is a poor mans M6, or a TT a poor mans R8.

+2 Also when Clarkson and Hammond say "the only reason people have a Boxster is because they cant afford a 911" That does my head in. So b***dy what!! Its still a great car, and its still a Porsche! :x
 
It irritates me when people call it "a poor man's 911" or whatever. I want a roadster. I could get a used 911 for not that much more than a used Boxster, but they aren't roadsters.

@Leon_in_UK, why would you take the Boxster over the Z4?

I can get a 2006 Z4 for about $5000 less than a 2006 M roadster. Is the M roadster $5000 more of a car, or if I were to put $5000 worth of work into the Z4, could it be comparable or better than an M roadster?

Possibly... I wouldn't buy a convertible 911. For me a convertible has to be a proper roadster, not a tin top with the roof lopped off. Oh, and James May did! Actually, thinking about it, a friend of mine did - wanted a soft top and not fond of the 911.

Ignoring the manufacturer, I bet the same percentage would answer the same to the following question...
But would you get a Z4 over a 911 if you had the money?

I do have the money for a 911, but I want a roadster. I don't want a 911 cabriolet, just like I don't want an M3, M5, or M6 convertible. I want a small two-seater. Truthfully, I like the TTS better than the Boxster and Z4 both, but it's just so ugly.

You would change your mind about that if you drove a 997 turbo convertible, stunning car to drive and feels as if it was designed as a soft top from the off. A Boxster or Z4 of any model doesn't really compare IMO.

I would say it is. It's set up as an M car so it feels very different. Steering, brakes, understeer vs oversteer, etc
