z4 vs 350z

I went from a 07 2.0i Z4 to 56 plate 350Z 300 GT and apart from the power difference i preferred the 350Z, it was more raw and put a bigger smile on my face, the 2.0i engine got a bit boring after a while as it was too easy to drive and throw around corners without much drama. 2006+ cars have better interiors then early cars and come with the rev-up 300ps engine, later cars have a 313ps engine which is even better. General opinion is the bose isnt that great and should be upgraded, i striped all mine out. It felt more planted on the road and i had more confidence in the 350Z then the Z4, It has much better brakes as brembos are standard on UK cars but it does have a big back end though and you feel it, its more of a GT cruiser as already mentioned. Servicing and parts are pretty cheap and not much goes wrong, you only need to be a member of both the Z4 and 350Z forum to see its a more reliable car. Fuel and tax are expensive but then it does have a 3.5l V6 that sounds awesome.

ps. Between a Z4M and 350Z if i could afford it yes i'd go with the M.

i narrowed my choices down to an s2000 or a 350z

S2000 IMO... I took one for a test drive and sure, on paper the Z4 is better, but revving the bollocks off the engine brings such a smile to your face... :D

Not saying it is technically better, but it is a completely different beast to drive, so could be worth owning one for that alone :D

why arnt things easy..

the local car super market has a 350z in so i may go down n test drive... no intetntion of buying but will give me an idea of if i like the car or not

Go with your gut instinct and don't buy into the "class" argument... BMW is an overpriced brand that no longer has the quality it used to... just check out our broken sprint thread, the amount of us with "sticky steering", "airbag lights on" etc... all of which the dealers usually do nothing about if it is outside warranty. Not saying other brands are much better, but be under no illusion that BMW is "special". I bought my Z4 because I like the Z4, not because it is BMW... if I could buy a more reliable one with a Honda badge on it I would ;)

tell me about it, i bought a replacement DISA unit today from the dealers, and despite him even saying they sell 100s of them, and i knew that they had superseeded the part back in 2004 they wouldnt do anything on it.
dont expect them to do it but a bit of discount would have been nice

I've driven my brother's 350Z a fair bit, test drove a 3.0 Z4 and own a Z4M so can give some comparisons. I think the 350Z is a great car and good value for money. Most of the comments on here I agree with and compared to a 3.0 Z4 I think it stands up well although it is more GT than sports car. Against the Z4M though it becomes deificent in every area except perhaps boot space. Some of the advantages mentioned in this thread that the 350Z has over a regular Z4 like meatier steering, power, brakes and feeling more planted are soon surpassed by the ///M, but then it does cost a whole lot more.

Whether it is a 350Z or an S2000, they are both great cars and if you want a change will serve you well. Just don't expect them to be leaps and bounds ahead of what you already have.

If you can stomach the servicing costs, have you considered a Boxster S? It is a much more sublime car to drive over anything mentioned, including the ///M

What is quite surprising is that the 350Z, with more power, takes longer to accelerate to 62 mph than the 3.0si and uses significantly more fuel doing so!

Heavier car and less efficient engine is pretty much the reason.

And in fact aren't the times identical? 0 - 60 (5.5) 0 - 62 (5.7)

Depends which model year - the most recent MY07 is definitely the same times as the 3.0si

I test drove a 350Z and loved it, great drama and it was only the looks of the roadster that stopped me buying it. Had I been looking for a coop then I might have been tempted. Interior is a bit plasticky in too many places when compard to a Z4. Had an S2000 and that is a good looking car but a bit sparse inside with a poor stereo as I recall, but then all you want to do is listen to that engine howl!
All are great drivers cars along with the ubiquitous Boxster. Each offers something a little different and you pays your money etc.

Oh come on guys, this is a lot of badge snobism. the Z 350 is a great car by any standards and fantastic value, something few other manufacturers offer.

since you've had so many cars you've got to try one with the engine the other way round, like a 911 or Alpine.

Can't say I see any badge snobbery in the posts you've quoted: purely fact. The earlier 350z's offer comparable performance to 3.0i Z4's but with Z4M fuel consumption. No snobbery involved in figuring out that's not the 350z's finest point. It was purely the running costs that scared me away from a 350z, I put no significance whatsoever on the badge on my car.

I applied exactly the same logic.

But the Z350 is more comfortabnle, suffers from less tyre noise and is a better ballanced car overall than the ///M.

I'm not saying its better than either 3.0 or M but its different and just as characterful whilst being a lot cheaper to buy. The way its being criticised on this post makes it out to be a pile of junk...

I do like the 350Z. It's a good car. I was debating between a 350Z or the Z4 when I was looking for my car. I went for the Z4, and the day I picked it up I saw a 350Z on my way home, and I instantly knew i'd done the right thing. I wouldn't change the Z for one.

Owned a 350Z GT4 before getting my Z4. Have to agree with most of what's posted above ... the car felt big, heavy and not at all 'nimble', the interior was terrible and whilst it looked ok, I don't think it was as striking as the Z4. I'd sum it up as saying it was good in a lot of ways (look, speed, handling, sound etc.), but none of these things were great - sadly, there was just nothing exceptional about it! Didn't miss it one bit when I chopped it in...

I'd stick with your current Z4

Hey if you read my previous posts I'm one of the ones defending the 350Z here having had two of them and loved them both! :poke:

everyone keeps saying about the dash .. is it really that bad as i think the z4 dash is one of the worst things ever made by man!

I test drove a 350Z before I bought my last Z4.. Went from 3rd to 4th gear and pulled the gear knob off.. About says it all for the build quality I think..
