Z4 v. Miata

So I'm new here, and thinking about a 2011 Z435is (there are some great lease deals in the States). I currently have a 2010 Mazda Miata, and wondered if anyone had any experience with both cars that they could share.

Thanks.

both are nice motors.

forget what others may say, take a test drive & (a) work out which one is best to drive (b) look at your reflection in shop windows & say which one do I look best in.

A bit vain, but I bought my Z coz I though it was the sexiest looking convertable around bar none, that could lift up its skirts & hoof it on command...

The Miata is pretty good-looking, but then I saw a newer Z4 in black that was freshly detailed, and it was drop-dead gorgeous.

Thanks.

I can't see how you can possible compare a Z4 to a Miata.....that's just wrong.

It's like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Mustang.....

x2

You can compare it to a 2.0i E85 Z4, which is what I was doing when I started looking. Soon decided the Z4 was the better car, wind noise from the mazda was terrible for starters.

The MX5 was the car that britain should have built as the replacement to the MGB, back in the day. People i know who've had them love them .Supposed to be a great drive but not the fastest car on the road. I like them but wouldn't have one and i think the Zed is much more of an animal. I used to love my MG Midget and could have more fun at 40 mile an hour than i could in the TVR S3 i had afterward. Contradicting myself slightly from comments in another thread but if i want a bit of a blast and to be able to hold my own against some of the jazzed up hot hatches often owned by residents of numptyville then the zed wins hands down. I think the MX5 isn't such a sharp contrast from the zed as some might suggest but i think you'd buy either car for very different reasons.

I have a 35is and my wife has an MX5 - there is no comparison apart from they are both two seaters with folding hardtops! DCT v manual gearbox, lots of bhp v not that much, quality v built to a price, goodies v not many and the list goes on. Finally, I just don't fit in the MX5 but, for what it is, it is a great little car - it's just in a rather (much) 'lower' league than the Z4, especially a 35is.

The current lease deals in the US are brilliant value, I've read about them on Zpost.

As the others have said there is no comparison between the two, I've had two of each.

At first I had the same reaction some others have had... how can you compare a BMW Z4 to a Mazda Miata? But the more I thought about it the more I thought a comparison is a reasonable request.

I owned two Miatas and my current 2009 Z4. Here are my thoughts. My first Miata was a 1999 and had a fair amount of miles. But I only paid $4000.00 for it. I look back on that car and think, " I had just as much fun in that car than I'm having in a car that cost me ten times as much." I also like how I didn't have to worry about every stone chip or small scratch. Plus that car had character. It had that vintage, I've-been-around-the-block feel... like a beat-up Harley the movie star drives with some hot woman's arms wrapped around him as they drive down Route 66 in a black and white movie.

Don't get me wrong... I love my Z4. It's faster, handles so much better, ride is much nicer from a sporty perspective and from a luxury perspective. Everything from about the Z4 is nicer, more refined, classier. But it won't have that character until it gets 50,000 miles plus, has those age marks, and the seats all show wear from my fat ass.

So, in conclusion, is a sleek, sporty $45,000 BMW Z4 a better, more fun car than a used, somewhat dented, ripped-seats Mazda Miata? The rational part of me says, "NO." But the irrational part of me that walks out in the garage ten times a day just to look at his Z4 says he'd never think to own a Miata again.
