Z4 Tyre Size 16 inch 205 or 225 2.2i 2005

Hi tyre question time ! sorry if this has been asked before

I have 16 inch wheels on, i presently got

Fronts 205/55 R16 at 30 PSI

Back 225/50 R16 at 31PSI

Can i put 205/55 R16 at 31 PSI on the back - tyre dealer told me that was illegal ? yet it on bmw ownerbook

Thought a) switching tyre would make ride softer i.e tyre wall height increased to 55 from 50
b) Cheaper tyre
c) Save my rear springs - had to replace both sides been expensive

c) Would if affect handling and performance? negative

Please comment?? confused one rear tyre need replacing what should i do? :tumbleweed:

You could change the rears to 225/55 but I doubt if you would notice any difference at all from 50 to 55 profile.

But if you are only intending on replacing a single rear then you need to match the size of the other one, don't mix them.
 
Just remember the side profile (the "55" or "50" part) is a percentage of the tyre width,

i.e. 50% of 225mm or 55% of 205mm.

Basically means the actual sidewall height would only change by 0.5m (or 1.0mm diameter), so there'd be absolutely NO difference in ride quality or protection for the springs, etc. changing from 225/50/16 to 205/55/16.

Not sure I'd want to put as narrow a tyre on the rear of a Z4 (unless it's for winter tyres you're talking about?). Outright rear end grip would be less - plus I was under the impression 225/50/16 is the smallest tyre BMW fit to the Z4 from new...

Went on a few tyre site an put by reg number this is the result that came back ??

I think i can fit 205 for the back but after the last snow I think my wheel spinning would be ridiculous!!

I am after your comments considering changing my front to 225 how would that affect the handling and drive??
