Z4 to Elise

I sat in an Elise recently and ever since I can't get the thought of swapping my Z4 for an Elise out of my head. Has anyone here also owned or owns an Elise? It would be my only car, but I only do one commute a week of a 100 mile round trip, how do they compare to the Z4?
Thanks
Sean

I thought of an elsie when i bought my Z , I only do 60 miles a week but I was put off because it's just so tiny and no luxuries

I had series 2 else a couple years ago and found I couldn't drive it fast down the motorway or a roads cos it was SO loud. Passing trucks was a nightmare and the driving experience in my opinion wasn't all that special. Looked great on the drive but I wouldn't have another. The roof mechanism is a pain and takes minutes rather than seconds , the stereo is useless over 25 mph and there is no grace to getting in and out! Stick with the zed!

I had a S1, it was too basic for everyday use. S2 with central locking, air-con, electric windows may be different.

I saw the Elise Club Racer in Autoexpress magazine. New car price starts from £27.5k.

Went out with an exige and it out handles my Z4M by a huge margin.

Looked at doing a swap but only as a weekend car. Elise is no fun on a cold winters morning.

I traded my Elise S2 for the Coupe as although the Elise is a great car, it is not a car you will want to drive in the winter. I would love another one but only as a 2nd car.

test drove an Elise 2 whilst looking for a new car and whilst its great fun, it just did not tick some of the pratical boxes that i wanted with a use every day car.

Well they certainly do well on track. Had a few goes with a series 2 and an SC. Both awesome with nice supple suspension and great sensations. Fab weekend toy. Having had a good look at though and its just a lawnmower of an engine (compared to a straight 6 and its built like a toaster. I would hate driving this everyday - it has zero GT capability. Europa is cheap and better equiped though, especially the later models. Just does not have the grunt of the Z in M format though.

Sean,

A mate of mine went from a Z4M Coupe to an Elise. Despite the fact he had loads of problems with it he still maintains to this day it's the best car he's ever had, Z4M included.

Why?

Performance, sheer go-kart thrills and smiles per mile.

One Team

My buddy has owned 3 of them. Tried to escape to a couple of alternative like a 911 and went back to Elise SC.

He has it as a weekend car only. It's hard work uncomfortable and no fun for anything other than when he needs to get out and drive for the sake of driving.

My daughters fiance also races an S1. Great on track but you can keep it as a road car

Thanks for all the tips guys. I'm getting the feeling that it may be to much of a compromise. Now just need to convince the wife that a Z4 and an Elise would be a good idea!!!

Ive always wanted an Elise and will be looking for an Early S2 111S 160bhp version once settled in the new house. Theres something about them that ive always loved and just have to have one, It doesnt even matter if it isnt the best car on the road.

Hi Seanodwyer,

I have owned my Z4 Coupe for only a couple of weeks, and a few years ago I owned an Elise. If you are prepared to put up with the noise and discomfort of getting in and out, and sometime wet I would recomend an Elise over just about any other car.

The driving experience is increadible. You wont find a car that steers better. I drove mine to Le Mans to Cardiff in one go, sans roof' and its fine on a long run.

But as some of the others have said, best as a 2nd car!

imo i have to agree with above... its more of a track slag then a daily run about.

I had a celica a few years back.. which runs the same engine (VVTLI) basically its torqueless so have to rev it to get any power out... and the second cam kicks in at 6.4K rpm.. which isnt ideal 90% of the time.

Also friends of mine which had them in the past found them unreliable.... which was the main reason why i didnt get one after my celica.

Right let's get this unreliable thing out of the way. Older cars had K series powerplants, these do suffer from HGF due to a poor design and poor levelling on cylinder liners. Most of these problems can be fixed by running a PRRT. Keep and eye on them and love them and it should be ok.

Later Toyota engines did away with HGF, and 99% of problems are gone. There was an oil starvation issue, prompting failures on cam lobes, this only seems to happen on tracked cars running sticky tyres, not a problem on the road I ever heard of. Can also be solved with a baffled sump or extra remote oil pressuriser.

I had a series 1 sport 160 (K series) as a daily driver, s2 with a supercharged Honda lump and a s2 exige S - both as weekend and track cars. Total breakdowns = 0.

The handling on an Exige/Elise is in another world to the z4, partly due to layout, unequal length double wishbones on each corner, but mainly because Lotus know how to setup a chassis.

You would miss the everyday usability of the BMW engines though, most of the Elise engines need their necks ringing to get the most out of them, but that's kind of the point. The Elise works in spite of it's engine and the z4 works because of it I would say.

They are noisy, but again that adds the the experience. Roofs are obviously all manual in the Elise, but you can remove an s2 roof in seconds from the inside so not an issue.

If you have a commute of less than say 40 miles each way it's no issue, I drove my series 1 all seasons (snow and all) on a 70 mile round trip each day. Without doubt z4 is more comfortable, but don't believe an Elise can't do it, its just whether you want to do it.

Boots practical too, you just need to be a creative packer!

The Elise is an awesome car, so is the z4. They can both do the same things as each other, just in different ways.

Love my zed, but still miss my Exige every day

If you want an utterly impractical second car with awesome handling, get a seven :driving:
