Tim.

After several iterations of the Z4 and several years of development by some very qualified BMW engineers - you say they've made it worse????? :?

Don't agree. My Z3 (which I loved) didn't have the same ride quality as my Z4 has.

Yepp the Z3 on my backside is much better, although I have all season tyres on which have a much softer compound. The Z4 isn't bad but when I jumped back in it after 5 months storage I though hmmmmm bouncy bouncy, fidgety fidgety lol. The 3 just glides along :)

So the "3" is like a saloon car? :D

I'm sure I read that the "3" suspension parts were raided from the parts bin. That would give some explanation to the more soft, compliant ride you say the car has.

e89 ride quality is improved on the e85 that's for sure. However, its still bloody crashy and harsh. Drove a 3 series the other day and it felt like a limo. e89 is fine on ok roads, but rough roads, esp here in the city where 1cm of road surface is missing all over the place... well... its not comfy.

I'm pretty used to BMWs ride quality with having 2 previous 1ers, its not until you get back into another car that you think it could be better :)

Z4 compared to my old 1 series had better ride quality. The new 3 series was much better though. Edinburgh has shocking roads though. I take off traction control to smooth the rides in some parts!

If you want to try a sports car with some seriously poor suspension then go and try a Morgan!

Between e85 and e89 I did have a patriotic flash and thought I might go down the traditional British sports car route. I went for a test drive in a fairly new one - suffice to say that now any thought of a Morgan has been binned forever. Yes it looked every bit the classic but it also felt like that it would put you in the first ditch with any lapse in concentration!

No, I think we ought to appreciate what a good comprimise the E89 is (mine has the msport suspension) and find it very acceptable. I dont really expect nor want it to feel like a saloon car.

Sorry Keith, forget it, you won't get enough to cover your finance. Ignore glasses etc. as in reality you are looking at 20 to 21k if you are lucky. :(

Just downgraded my Z4 sdrive20i auto and got £22k, Glasses said £24k+

Several BMW dealers were approached and the best I could get was £21k on a trade in for a 1 series, others wouldn't even give a price. BMW are still giving stupid discounts on new which are hammering residuals. The most annoying bit was my local dealer offered £19k! Oh and my car had lower mileage.

I was only able to get the £22k via a specialised small trader that buys a few niche cars at a time and he then only asked £22,950 for it so no huge mark up.

Oh and I am now in a Hyundai i20  but at least I should be in my nice new house next week

That's the nature of 2 seater roadsters, people buy them for that allure then realise they're shortcomings so get shot and back into a hatch. To be honest the residuals don't bother me so long as BMW keep on doing their special deals and dealer contributions as will just go for whatever deal is going at the time. Unless you really need to sell you would be balmy too at 12 months, I've done it and it just one big loss of money.

As I have another car in the household, I've no need to change, and the depreciation mobs my mind presently, preventing my doing anything unless an amazing car comes up. But, if I were to change, it would be back to something more comfortable (though not necessarily more practical). The practicalities of a 2 seater I can live it, the times I sh^t myself as the car bangs on the smallest road imperfection I can't. Still, I may yet persevere and get into non run flats and that may change my mind.

As with most cars, the longer you can keep it, the better off you're likely to be. Don't sell unless you absolutely have to.

Keep a balance tho, this life is not a dress rehersal!

The older you get the more this fact comes into sharp focus and If you want a new car and can sensibly afford it then just go ahead and buy it, you dont need to justify it.

Your coffin lid's nailed down for a long time! :D

Nothing to do with getting a practical car in my case as we have the wife's freelander 2. All about a big jump in house size (not cheap in Oxfordshire) and I wanted to reduce the monthly outgoings. We weren't even looking to move 2 months ago

I ended up taking a £900 hit of negative equity which I thought wasn't too bad and will make that up in a few months of not paying BMW finance. In hindsight I probably could have kept the Z4 but I finally admitted to myself that the performance of the 20i wasn't enough to tempt me (not a slouch but the feel wasn't there) to keep it and I will try and save for a few years and see where I am then.

Good luck Keith but be realistic, that was a lesson learned fast once I made my mind up....

Oh and yes it was a replacement car so can only imagine how much less I would have been offered with a manual and no heated seats!

Without even having a real try, I have been offered £22k for the car which is fine. At the moment I am at a bad time to sell. Snow around me and not the weather to sell nor the season. I am going to give it a month or so before I decide to sell it. I know I may have to take the hit of negative equity however that part of life. The garage that offered me the money said that the heated seats, extended lighting and the sound system usually sell the car. Something to do that people love the door handles lighting up haha!

Currently at the moment I pay £1 a mile in the Z4 in terms of costs, etc. that will jump to about £30 a mile since I won't be using it as much in the new location. Of course I could still keep it as very expensive luxury. I am also looking to trade it in against something just as luxury but less of a cost.

I bought mine and will hold ont to it. Get my monies worth as in the past i usually lost £1500/yr on old second hand cars. So many peps dropping dead around me thought i would blow my savings on something nice..can't take it with you!

Better to hold onto it... mine cost me £48K new and is worth £22K now... in just 3.5 years... Its why, despite all the 1st gen issues I've had, its still not sold... though I confess.. I am tempted to move on... a person can only take so much.
