Z4 Standard Stereo Upgrade

I have a z4m Coupe with standard stereo and the sound quality is truely horrid. I would like to upgrade it. What are the best options, I want to keep the existing head unit as I dont want the look of an aftermarket system. Can I install an amp with the existing head unit or can I buy a new bmw head unit which will fit an amp. Or is the best place to start is some new speakers?

Any help would be greatfully received!!

A lot depends on how much you are willing to spend.

If you want top sound, and cost is not an issue, then look into the JL CleanSweep. It not only converts the signals from your head unit to clean line-level output, it normalizes the frequency response to be perfectly "flat". This is important because when car companies design the audio system, they tweak the output to make up for the crappy speakers (and vise versa). If you just amplify the factory signal and send it to good speakers, you will amplify any unwanted peaks or lows and the sound will suffer. I heard a demonstration (using a Honda headunit ... BMW may be better or worse) and the difference was pretty obvious.

After you use the CleanSweep, you can add an amp, and any other speakers you want, and the quality will be as good as you are willing to pay for. Most amps these days are fantastic, so don't get caught paying too much when the difference is undetectable. Any good brand's mid-lever amp should work well. (Unless you plan to compete...) As far as speakers, you will find that it is a matter of taste. I like Infinity for a less expensive option, and Focal if you have deep pockets. Their are lots of other good ones, though. It pays to audition them with a CD that you are very familiar with.

Thats fantastically helpful, thanks so much. Basically I got the car at a really good price so am happy to spend a bit on getting the stereo up to scratch. I previously had a 330D with the factory fitted Logic 7 system and that was really good so am only looking to match that level of output.

So is it a relatively easy install for a JL Cleansweep and an amp? I will get a pro to do it as I am not experienced in audio install in cars, was just wondering how many hours they should be looking at.

Thanks again for your help.

Well, as with any install, it's the wiring that takes the time. I can't estimate how long that would take, but it won't be any longer than average. The CleanSweep simply connects to speaker leads and then runs the signal to an amp with an RCA cable. (The installer might put it in the dash.) So, it doesn't really add much to the complexity of the install, just the component cost.

Would it be possible to put it all in the boot do you think? or does it need to be closer to the head unit?

Hi,

I think i've got the standard 6 speaker set-up as i can't see an amp or subwoofer anywhere.

i'm planning on getting a Pioneer all-in-one amp/sub to just get a few more lower bass notes. nothing too lairy.

I've got the standard 6 speaker stereo in my coupe and I bought the infinity Sub/Amb all in one combo. Doddle to fit and makes a whole world of difference.

Definately a worth while upgrade.

yeah I read the site, but i wasnt entirely clear on what simply got left out of the descriptions of the others (such as the amp next to the battery)

how do i know whether it has DSP?

Al Blue4.6l - if you go into the audio settings and you see the DSP function, you have the top hifi system.

I've recently sourced the top hifi system - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=338828#p338828- thanks daffy
and was wondering what else I'd need in terms of wires, etc...

Are there any install guides?
