Z4 + Snow

The Z4 is our snowboarding car.

This year we're planing on getting some snow tires to make it easier, but with snow chains it rides just like any other car.

I was wondering when you were going to pull those back out.

LOL!!! I know... I just noticed this topic... And btw, this year we're gonna have snow tires... eheheh

Firs of all, BMW has a detailed procedure on how to install the rails and the trunk lid is already pre-marked: if you buy the rails, your dealers will print them out and give 'em to you.

Anyway, here's a few pix to clarify my previous msg.

Here's how the rails looks like:

The inside of trunk will look like this:

Here you can see the trunk stoppers with the spring mechanism that helps to open the lid when the rack is mounted. I can give you the BMW p/n if you're interested.

This is the strap to hold the lid when the rack is mounted. This is necessary only when the rack is installed. When not, the trunk is free to open as normal.

I'm *so* glad you posted these pictures! I'll be wanting to fit the rails before the summer so that I can put the luggage rack onto the Z4. We went camping in a Ford Focus last year and all our various junk only just fitted. There's no way it's going to fit into the Z4 without seriously slimming down what we take and also fitting the boot rails and luggage rack.

I'd not been able to find any decent pictures on the web of the rails fitted - and yours is even on the same colour car as mine so I now know exactly how it'll look - Thanks! :)

I wasn't sure how they'd look but I'm surprised, they're look fine, more than happy to have them fitted :)

Thought this video on winter tyres was pretty interesting: :)

Good find

Obviously there is a difference in the cars, as they said, and they could be driven better IMO... "now change into second"?! But the cars at least both appear to have been driven in the same style - start in first and give it some!

Seriously thinking about spare winter wheel / tyre setup for next year. Why waste the summer ones when I'm not getting the full benefit anyway!

Pity they couldn't manage to do a proper test by using identical cars for both tyres.

The 1-series probably has 225 high profile rear tyres whereas the 6-series has 265 low profiles.
Even if you used the same tyre (albeit in the narrower size for the 1-series), I'm sure the 1-series would have gotten off the mark as easily as it did with the 'all/cold weather' (as he described it) tyre.

They didn't even state what the tread levels were like on the respective tyres - a near baldy tyre on the 6-series would have had a much greater deficit on grip than a summer tyre with 8mm on.

mmm-five, yeah, I know what you mean. One thing though, compared to my recent experience, I thought the 1 series did okay in those depths of snow and on that "icy" road - especially given that they were starting in first and spinning the wheels quite a bit. I've seen a lot of people this last week where once they get some wheel spin things come to a halt pretty quickly!

cj10jeeper and daveg - thank you for your information about roof cleaner / treatment. I'm looking forward to fairer weather so that I can wash the car and treat the roof. Raggtop certainly sound the best bet at the mo.

ZetraTre - many thanks for the extra photos and information about the boot rack.

I was going to drive the car today but more snow fell overnight, then more this morning, had a meeting to get to, walked, and more snow fell in the arvo.

Used the z4 for first time in a few days yesterday - was luxury and bliss. Relying on the Fiesta (trusty little machine, been reliable) in the ice or slushy snow.

Anybody else getting cabin fever and itching to get their car out, AGAIN! Not brave enough to go out with roof down (contemplated it last night!), until there's less ice.

I couldn't take it any longer, I had to take the Zed out for a spin, got out, made it the 300yds to the clear road, went to the store , drove around on the nice clear but gravelly roads, came back and promptly got stuck 4 times in front of the driveway. The snow is packed down to 4" of ice with slush on top. wheels spinning, high centered. I should have known better but it was worth it for the 15 minutes I had the car out. :D :D :D :D

Tomorrow: Get the ice chisel, a selection of shovels and clear out all the pack ice from the front of the house. Oh yes , and pick up a few sandbags for the back end. Then try it again, wahooo !!! :D :D :D :D

Here's some more pix of today's snowboarding trip. I really gotta get snow tires: summer tires work just as well as a sled...
