Z4 + Snow

Extra weight - Don't worry about cornering and momentum, it's like having your GF in the car except the weight is over the drive wheels where it should be. Pretty much like hauling a few cases of beer or lots of groceries. Besides, you won't be racing, just trying to get somewhere without pranging it up.

So, if I put her in the boot I could kill two birds with one stone?

(I am, of course, jesting :))

I picked my car up from the delaer at 8:00 yesterday morning, drove half a mile home alone very bad road and put straight i the garage and took the wifes Astra to work, much cheaper and less important than the Z4.

Anyway just as I was passing the BMW delaer on my way to work one of their saleman gave round the roundabout to fast and the back end stepped out about 45 degrees, and I waited for impact. I think he missed the side of my wifes car by 2". Sods law would have said in the Z4 he would have hit me.

A couple of years ago I got stuck on a hill in my E46, I got it going in the end but it's just not worth the risk IMO, it's the only time front wheel drive has an advantage.

Well, my Zed spend the evening at the Gym since she really wouldnt behave herself going up those hills on the way home. The roads have cleared a bit now so managed to get her into the garage and tucked into bed! haha. Only time Ive fully switched off the electronics - worked well. Well, when I say "well" I mean she kind of moved forward and more or less stayed in a straight line! :)

I was planing on taking the day off but when my boss said "I might have a crappy punto but at least I can get in" that was it  :driving:

Nah, I tried that once, that's why I'm on #4. (plus she's 5'10" without heels) It's easier to use sandbags, they don't "backseat" drive.

last night i went out in the Zed, what an experince lol, every other car managed but the zed, well it was absolutely useless hehe, the slightest of an up hill slope and it just spun every where, it was fun though

Snow has been really bad here on the very exposed North East Coast, last night the Journey from Newcastle to home (usually 20 mins) took 2 and a half hours in the TT with Quattro. Everywhere, BMW's that just couldnt cope in the snow, Two Z4's abandoned on the sea front road..... mine remains in the garage. They are spectacularly bad in the snow. Now to convince the other half that its safEr to get the train into work so I can use the TT

I woke up to this on Friday morning and had so much fun in the hotel car park.

The only downside was thet fact that the snow completely obscured the speed bumps along the hotel's drive :headbang:

I was also happy to see most people had been sensible and stayed at home - and my 40 mile journey to the dealer only took 45 minutes

Saw a few cars in ditches and even more seemingly abandoned. The worst part was having to pass 4x4s on the snowier outside lane of the dual carriageways, and almost hit a cyclist who decided to cross in front of me at a set of lights (mine were on green, and the cyclist came across the pedestrianised part) - there was no way I could stop and just closed my eyes and pressed the horn until he looked around and I could give him the 'coffee beans'

Interesting drive to work this morning... town where I live is still like an ice rink! 4th gear, 20mph, tickle the throttle a little too much and the car was all over the place. Thankfully 5th seemed to work okay... and pulled too from surprisingly low speeds! What a fantastic little engine

Still, really struggle to comprehend other drivers carrying on like a bunch of yobs... some where even tailgating!

Poor picture, but you'll get the idea...

Outside the office - 8 miles from home!

Not far?! A little while a 0.7 mile journey had taken a colleague 2 hours! At the moment, there is little point in me leaving. I don't even get paid overtime!

This is in Reading by the way - avoid at all costs! Even more than usual.

pfft.. Pawn you girl... it's not even up to your alloys!

Think of it this way; if you stack it, then you'll get money from the insurance to buy your //M......

Oh dear. Had to leave the car at work and still on the the train going home. Within 2 hours the roads ground to a halt in Bracknell.

Bah humbug - not even the slightest sprinkle of snow in Lichfield

Incredible cold and frosts never getting above 0c, have turned our roads into an ice rink. Makes the dash look like a Christmas tree even driving down our close. Mrs CJ enquired as to why I find it necessary to continue to accelerate hard when there is evidently no grip and what's that button next to the heated seat I keep switching on and off. Best to not know

I risked drive home through country lanes. ALl was fine at my clients site and I was keeping an eye on the weather. The Met Office gave conflicting information on the weather, suddenly the heavens opened. I was hopeful I would make it home but country lanes, lack of grit, lack of traffic (foks stayed off the roads) meant a very hair raising experience. I nearly lost it changing down a gear one as the rear came lose, and nealy spun it round a bend but managed to control it. If it wasn`t for a steep-ish hill I would have made it home as the rest if the journey was reasonably flat. I got over 50% up it but had to ease off the throttle each time due to the rear end starting to go and it just lost momentum. When I knew I was going to fail I did a sharp right turn into a field (with understeer and with a bang) because I didn`t want to risk it stopping on the hill. Not long afterwards the bas*ard gritters went by and within minutes the road was slushy again (it was nearly pure white when I attempted the hill). By this time however the car was already in an unmoveable position. I`ve now driven it further into the field as I was afraid someone would come down the hill and crash into it, it`s also a little better hidden from prying eyes. I faced a 5- 8 mile hike home along dark country lanes or sleep in the car overnight but ended up thumbing a lift with FWD trash white van man :) - they are good sometimes even though he nearly rear ended someone twice and nearly spun it too despite going slow.

Hopefully the car is safe tonight in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere, and I return tomorrow with shoovel and hopefully a bit of luck to dig the bugger out.

Think the car is alright, the bang I think was just the suspension as I went over the bumpy entrance to the field.

SAid it before and will say it again - I HATE WINTER :)

Hmm.. doesn't sound like no weight at the back is condusive to getting anywhere in the snow. Luckily there's no hills near where I live so all I'll have to careful of is corners and mentalists. :|

So, As I left for work this morning I found the car had grown a spoiler over night.

Made it to work, but needed pushing into place in this parking spot, the very closest one to the gates. Had no end of issues trying to get grip and up the slight incline on the entrance to the car park. I've been truly shocked by just how *bad* the Z4 is in the snow (this being my first RWD car). Lots of chuckles and much amusement from colleagues - "my 50quid Fiesta made it up there no problem!" etc.

Decided the best thing I could do is take fellow forum-members advice and get some weight over the back wheels to help traction. Luckily, CostCo is on my way home.

So hopefully I'll have more luck on the way to work tommorrow. And if not, then at least I can have a few beers once I eventually get home :)
